SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From California to Maine, breweries across the country are stepping up to help California fire victims.The effort started with the Sierra Nevada brewery. While their facility was spared by the Camp Fire, communities around it were devastated.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman reached out to fellow brewers to join him in the disaster relief effort, making their ‘Resilience Butte County Proud IPA’ recipe available to those who want to help. The brewery is asking that 100 percent of profits go to fire relief efforts. So far over 1,200 breweries have pledged to make and sell the beer.“I’ve never seen anything on this scale,” said Jim Millea, brewmaster at OB Brewery. “That’s a lot of beer being made for a good cause, it’s pretty sweet!”Millea says he didn’t hesitate to join the effort.“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a good cause?” said Millea. He’s one of many in the San Diego region who will be brewing Resilience IPA. Millea hopes to have his on tap at the OB Brewery in a few weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeless encampments have moved into the site of previous fires in University heights, sparking more fire concerns.March 2018. Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the second time in as many weeks, several train cars derailed near the downtown San Diego area.The BNSF Railway Company says 19 cars derailed at about 9:40 p.m. Friday while traveling at slow speeds. The train cars were carrying automobiles.The backup continued into Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Family, friends and fellow Airmen gathered to pay a final salute to a San Diego Air Force pilot killed in a training accident last month. Second Lieutenant Travis Wilkie was buried with full military honors today at Miramar National Cemetery. It was a somber scene as a horse-drawn carriage arrived with the casket carrying the 23-year-old graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Wilkie's parents, sister, and new wife, Peyton looked on as members of the Base Honor Guard escorted the flag-draped coffin. Two T-38 Talon jets were landing in formation when something went wrong. Wilkie excelled in everything he did. He was a standout baseball player and honors student at La Jolla Country Day School. He continued playing ball and setting records at the Air Force Academy. He graduated from the academy in 2018 and was just weeks away from getting his wings, according to a statement by the family. Wilkie and his girlfriend had just married in October. Peyton is also in the Air Force. Military officials say it could be a couple of months before they know what caused the crash. 1308
