BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Home prices in 70 large and medium-sized Chinese cities rose by 12.4 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Thursday. The growth rate was 0.4 percentage points lower than that of April, as property sales in first-tier cities, including, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, contracted following a string of government measures to rein in price rises.Second-hand homes prices posted a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percent in May, but fell 0.4 percent from April, said the NBS in the statement.New home prices rose 15.1 percent year on year, down 0.3 percentage points from April. In May, floor space sold stood at 67.77 million square meters, a decrease of 12.74 million square meters from April.Floor space sold in the first five months climbed 22.5 percent from a year earlier to 302 million square meters. Growth in the first five months was down 10.3 percentage points compared with the January-April period.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered floods left 273 people dead and 218 missing since rainstorms struck south China on July 1, latest figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs show; up from the 146 deaths reported on July 16.As of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, about 58 million people in 11 provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by the floods, with 3 million being evacuated and resettled, according to a statement released Wednesday by the ministry.A total of 330,000 homes and some 4 million hectares of crops have also been destroyed. Also, economic losses were estimated at about 58.27 billion yuan (8.53 billion U.S. dollars), the statement said.Additionally on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Affairs earmarked 329 million yuan for disaster relief in the flood-hit provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Hubei and the municipality of Chongqing. The funds will be used for the evacuation and resettlement efforts, reconstruction and death gratuities, said the statement. The previous relief funds of 370 million yuan was allocated to the provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan, and Chongqing Municipality on July 16.Also on Wednesday, the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee allocated 5.5 million yuan "special membership fees" for disaster relief in the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Yunnan and the municipality of Chongqing.Earlier Wednesday, the Chinese government revealed that torrential rains and floods, the worst in a decade, have claimed the lives of 701 people and left 347 missing in China since the beginning of the year.Liu Ning, vice minister of Water Resources, warned that floods, mud-flooding and landslides would likely continue to plague some areas in Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi with landfall of a severe tropical storm, named Chanthu, on Thursday.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, will peak in August before starting to fall in the following months of the year, an economist said Sunday."The CPI is likely to surpass 3.3 percent in August but that will be the highest level for the year," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Shanghai-based Bank of Communications. He said commodity prices will remain relatively low in the short term as market concern about a weak economic recovery linger and as the European debt crisis spreads.Chinese inflation will also ease due to China's slower economic growth rates and a fall in the price of industrial goods, Lian added. However, long-term inflationary pressures cannot be ruled out, due to potential rises in the cost of food, labor and natural resources, he said.Lian said he expects inflationary pressures to grow in March and April next year.Largely on the back of rising food prices after widespread flooding wrecked crops and disrupted shipping, China's July CPI rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier, the fastest rate since October 2008.The CPI for the first seven months of the year stood at 2.7 percent, below the whole-year target of 3 percent.

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts on Tuesday refuted claims by the Pentagon released in a report that China is developing cyberwarfare capabilities, saying that the U.S. military was attempting to blacken China's image."I've never heard about any plans by China to develop its cyber attack forces, not to mention China's so-called 'organized cyber intrusion," Hu Qiheng, president of the Internet Society of China (ISC) told Xinhua on the sidelines of the China Internet Conference, which opened here Tuesday."It is a mere fabrication that China is using computer technologies to intrude on other countries' sovereignty," Hu said. The Chinese expert's comments came after the U.S. Department of Defense concluded early Tuesday in its annual assessment report sent to the U.S. Congress that "China is fielding...cyberwarfare capabilities to hold targets at risk throughout the region.""The U.S. purpose (of releasing such a report) is to tarnish China's image and exaggerate the threat China poses," Hu said. The U.S. was the top country of cyber attack origin in 2008, accounting for 25 percent of worldwide activity, according to a report by U.S. security firm Symantec. The ISC said more than 1 million Internet Protocol addresses in China were controlled by overseas hackers while 42,000 Chinese websites were tampered or hacked in 2009.Ni Feng, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the United States has greatly outstripped any other country in terms of Internet technological power."As the source of Internet technology, the United States enjoys the most advanced Internet technologies and equipment in the world," Ni said, "thus it makes no sense and is beyond my comprehension for the United States to play up such cyber threat from China.""Maybe the only reasonable explanation is that the United States has always been on the alert for China's development," Ni said. "The U.S. government needs this kind of rhetoric as an excuse to scale up its cyberwarfare capabilities and win support from Congress, the media and the public at large.""If the United States continues such behavior, looking for topics to attack China, the mistrust between the two countries will only get worse," he added.
