SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries after their small engine plane crashed near Montgomery Field Airport on Thursday afternoon.The incident was reported around 4:30 p.m. near the executive airport at Kearny Villa Road and Balboa Avenue.According to the San Diego Police Department, a witness said the plane crashed behind a building near the airport and was helping the pilot.The plane had just taken off from the airport when it clipped trees and crash landed in an open space behind the Kyocera business building on Balboa Avenue, said Dan Eddy, Battalion Chief of the San Diego Fire Department Two male passengers were responsive when crews arrived but were transported with major injuries.Police said there was no active fire and no structures or vehicles were damaged.Eddy estimated at least 20 gallons of fuel spilled from the wrecked plane.The plane missed a high voltage area by about 30 feet, said Eddy.No further information was provided at this time. 1004

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the unknown future of in-person education, the Cajon Valley Union School District has continued to welcome kids to campus since March, but not as students. They’re offering child care.“They’re getting topics that they typically wouldn’t always get during the school year. Fun, light topics more like a summer camp but still learning,” said Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Karen Minshew.She said their priority is giving a safe place to stay for children as their parents go to work.Gov. Gavin Newsom and California health officials have laid out a plan stating counties have to be off the state’s monitoring list for 14 days before they can reopen schools. Minshew said even with this announcement, their current setup falls within the guidelines.“Nothing had changed in terms of the model for child care so yes there’s was information for schools and what’s possible for schools but not child care,” she said.Danica Mitchell has a son who will be starting first grade in the fall. She dropped him off at Chase Avenue Elementary School for the summer program and said she’s happy with the steps the school has taken to keep the students safe.“I’m emotional because I’m an essential worker so both my husband and I work and we need to work to support our family so it’s very important that my child have somewhere to go,” said Mitchell.Minshew said they are considering four different models for the fall term but no matter what happens regarding education and policies for having students on campus, they will be there to offer childcare no matter what. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When you are out in public, it is virtually impossible to tell who has immunity to the coronavirus and who is susceptible.A San Diego-based company is trying to change that by developing two new COVID-19 monitoring systems that are as easy as checking someone’s forearm.Diomics is developing a device that looks like a nicotine patch that the company says can reveal the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in 24 to 36 hours. The patch is intended to be worn for one to two weeks, offering people a way to monitor -- and potentially display -- their infection status, according to CEO Anthony Zolezzi.When the patch, named Diocheck, detects antibodies circulating in the blood, it turns red.“We think this is an integral piece of getting things back to normal,” Zolezzi said. “This can get the country back operating and get us comfortable that the people around us aren’t infected.”A second device, made from thousands of tiny polymer beads, can be injected into the skin and offer COVID monitoring for six months to a year, Zolezzi said. The company is still testing how long the test can stay active before it’s safely absorbed by the body.The company plans to launch clinical trials at UC Irvine next month.Zolezzi envisions the tests would be useful for employees in numerous sectors, including the airline industry, the cruise industry, the gambling industry and the military, offering a new way to detect and rapidly quarantine infected individuals.Once a coronavirus vaccine is released, the tests could be a useful companion, he said, since it will likely take several weeks to develop protective antibodies after inoculation. An individual wearing the patch, for example, could find out when they have antibodies circulating in the blood.The tests could also show when a person begins to lose antibodies. Studies have show individuals with a mild coronavirus infection lose antibodies after a few months, and it’s common for vaccines to require multiple doses.“This patch will show you, when the color dissipates, it’s because your antibodies have dissipated,” Zolezzi said. “That’s the time when you need to get a boost, or some type of prophylaxis.”The small biotech firm with less than 20 employees is leveraging technology that’s more than 100 years old.In 1907, a French physician named Charles Mantoux developed an injection test for tuberculosis that produces a raised, red dot on the skin when the bacteria is detected. This is the standard test given today.“All we’re doing is modernizing it,” Zolezzi said. The company’s patented slow-release material allows for much longer monitoring, he added.Diomics was making skin care, wound care and diabetes products before the pandemic shifted the company’s focus. Their components are FDA approved individually, but will need new approval for this use, Zolezzi said.Zolezzi said production is underway, but the company is hoping to partner with a large drugmaker to rapidly scale up manufacturing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teenage boys from Arizona were hailed as heroes after diving off Sunset Cliffs to save the lives of two people who were drowning on Friday evening. It was a happy ending scene, captured by local photographer, Jim Grant on Friday evening as lifeguards hoisted up a young girl off Sunset Cliffs."It just could have been a tragic event," Grant said on Saturday.He says the photo he took would have been a somber one if two teenage boys did not dive in to save the girls before lifeguards got there. Meet 15-year-old Jake Watson and 16-year-old Zachary Haugen."We've been best friends since third grade," Haugen said.The two boys from Arizona were vacationing in San Diego for the July 4th weekend."We said, 'Alright, let's go explore around,' and we heard about this place called Sunset Cliffs," Watson said.They say they were soaking in the beautiful sunset Friday evening. But when the boys looked down, they saw two ladies in trouble. A six-grade girl and a family friend were splashing around near the reef. Haugen, a licensed lifeguard for the City of Phoenix, knew exactly what was going on."I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, they're drowning.' So that's when I just knew I had to go in." Haugen recalled.They say the girl was climbing on top of the young woman's head, just to breathe. Haugen first pulled the girl off the woman, but the high surf put his own life at risk."I looked up at Jake," Haugen said. "He's like, 'Do you need help?' And I'm just shaking my head, and that's when he was able to jump in and go after them."At that point, Watson, an avid fisherman and swimmer, dove in to lift the girl."I put her on my back and pressed up, and just kind of rolled her off my shoulder, onto the landing," Watson said.They then pulled the injured young woman up. All this happened in under five minutes before San Diego Lifeguards took over."We were like, 'What just happened?' It just felt surreal," Watson said.Surreal that their summer vacation turned into a life-saving episode, these modest boys will never forget."We just happen to be at the right place at the right time at Sunset Cliffs," Haugen said. 2240

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While face masks are required for everyone at San Diego International Airport, Southwest Airlines is taking it a step further.The airline said they are now requiring all passengers to don a face mask for the safety of crew members and other travelers.Southwest’s policy, which took effect Monday, has one exception -- children under the age of 2 will not have to wear a face covering.In a statement, Southwest said, in part: “If a customer is unable to wear a face covering or mask for any reason, Southwest regrets that will be unable to transport the individual. In those cases, Southwest hopes the customer will allow them to welcome them onboard in the future, if public health guidance, or other safety related circumstances regarding face coverings changes.”Before this, Southwest had already stepped up the cleaning and disinfecting of their planes. The airline is also booking a limited number of people on board.They’re also using HEPA air filters to circulate air through the cabin on every flight. Southwest said these specialized air filters are similar to the technology found in hospitals.On Wednesday, American Airlines will join Southwest and implement the same face covering requirement. 1232
