SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rainwater run-off from the Tijuana River flooded parts of Monument Road, Thursday afternoon. Just up the hill is the border fence that separates Mexico and the United States. But that does not stop debris from flowing into San Diego. Residents in the area say this flooding happens every time it rains. Precipitation means the Tijuana River Diverter gets shut down, which brings in millions of gallons of stormwater run-off, including trash, raw sewage, chemicals, and diseases. To many, the stench is unbearable. “There’s a tire factory that’s dumping chemicals down there. There’s a car battery company dumping chemicals, you have every chemical and disease coming through here, and our poor Border Patrol has to go through it," resident, James Martin said. US Border Patrol's Swift Water Response team closed off Monument Road earlier in the afternoon, while monitoring the flow from above. Because of this toxic run-off, San Diego County announced they have block access to all beaches in the South Bay. Participants lined up to meet the man many saw in the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, and who records the words many of them have studied.“It's really kind of an honor that they all come here, and they think I’m, you know, somebody famous and interesting to meet,” says Dr. Bailly. “We're here to honor them.”Dr. Bailly has a keen understanding of what the spellers are going through.He won the Bee in 1980 and has some tips for spellers taking the stage.“The way to spell a word you don't know: you spell it the way it sounds,” he advises. “Don't make a fancy guess. Don't assume there's a silent ‘Q’ because there aren't very many of those you know just felt the way it sounds. That's kind of the best guess.”His advice for beating the jitters?“I think a deep breath is one of the best things,” he says. “It's just, you know, to feel free, to get up there and go. (AP) - The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department released new photographs Friday in its search for the man suspected of shooting and killing a Newman Police officer. Cpl. Ronal Singh, who emigrated from his native Fiji, was shot at about 1 a.m. Wednesday after stopping a suspected drunken driver in Newman, southeast of San Francisco in the San Joaquin Valley. There was a gunfight as Singh "absolutely tried to defend himself" but he apparently didn't hit the suspect, Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson, whose agency is leading the investigation, said Thursday. The man suspected of killing him the day after Christmas remained at large Friday despite a manhunt and was considered armed and dangerous. While law enforcement agencies throughout California had been alerted, the man was believed to still be in the local area. "We will find him, we will arrest him and we will bring him to justice," the sheriff said. Investigators Thursday searched a farmhouse in the town of El Nido in neighboring Merced County but didn't find the suspect, authorities said. His name wasn't released but he was in the United States illegally. "He doesn't belong here. He is a criminal," Christianson said Thursday. Singh was the first officer to die in the line of duty, Chief Randy Richardson said. Singh, a 33-year-old with a newborn son, was an "American patriot," the chief said. "He came to America with one purpose, and that was to serve this country," Richardson said. Singh drove more than two hours each way to attend the police academy in Yuba City, Richardson said. He joined the Merced County sheriff's office as a reserve officer and worked as an animal control officer in Turlock before being hired by the Newman force in 2011. English was Singh's third language and he had a thick accent but took speech classes to improve his communication, the chief said. Singh is survived by his wife, Anamika, and their 5-month-old son. (AP) — Amazon's self-driving robots will be roaming the streets of another neighborhood.The online shopping giant said Tuesday that the six-wheeled robots, about the size of a smaller cooler, will begin delivering packages to customers in Irvine, California. It comes after Amazon began testing them in a suburb of Seattle at the beginning of the year.Amazon said the robots, which are light blue and have the Amazon smile logo stamped on its sides, are able to avoid crashing into trash cans or pedestrians.
