HANOI, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday accepted an invitation to visit China early next year, a Chinese official said.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie extended the invitation during his talks here with Gates, Guan Youfei, a Chinese Defense Ministry official, told a press conference.Although very brief, the meeting showed that both sides attach great importance to developing military ties between the two countries, and was helpful to enhance mutual understanding and trust, he said. The tete-a-tete between the two defense chiefs was their first since bilateral military ties soured in January following Pentagon's decision to sell a 6.4-billion-dollar arms package to China's Taiwan province. While noting the setback, Guan said that ties between the two militaries have never ceased moving forward, and dialogues and exchanges under some established frameworks will continue.Beijing and Washington will hold their annual consultations on maritime security in Hawaii later this week, which will be followed by a new round of annual defense consultations in Washington, he added. The schedule has not been fixed for the Washington meeting, which is to be co-hosted by Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian and U.S. Under-Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy, Guan said.Commenting on the on-again-off-again military ties between China and the United States, Guan stressed that the main obstacle is Washington's arms sales to Taiwan.During talks with Gates, the Chinese defense minister said it is important for the two countries to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, consolidate mutual trust and decrease suspicion and misjudgment, and properly settle differences and sensitive issues in order to keep bilateral military ties in a healthy track.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China welcomed the World Trade Organization's (WTO) ruling that United States imposition of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on four types of Chinese imports was inconsistent with WTO regulations, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Saturday. The four categories of Chinese imports include standard steel pipe, rectangular steel pipe, laminated woven sacks, and off-road tires, according to an online statement posted on the MOC's website. In a report released Friday, the WTO's dispute settlement body found that the U.S. department of Commerce had acted inconsistently with WTO rules on five elements of the case, which China filed to the WTO in 2008.The U.S. should conduct trade remedy investigations strictly in accordance with the WTO regulations, an unnamed official from the MOC's Department of Treaty and Law said in the statement. However, China was also concerned over some views and rulings made by the WTO expert panel, and would handle issues such as complaints according to WTO disputes settlement procedures, said the official.

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Thursday called for efforts from both sides to safeguard the relations between China and the United States."The two nations should further enhance understanding and mutual trust to avoid politicizing economic and trade issues," Wang said when meeting Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state.During their meeting at Zhongnanhai in downtown Beijing, Wang said Sino-U.S. relations were "moving forward through difficulties."Economic and trade cooperation between the two sides were expanding and the interaction between Chinese and U.S. enterprises and markets intensifying, Wang said."China will not change its policy of opening-up and the investment environment will also be improved," he said, asking foreign entrepreneurs to be confident and patient.Albright said a sound U.S.-China relationship was critical to the world economy.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan have no secret agreement concerning the Diaoyu Islands issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said here Thursday.Ma's remarks came after media reports said Japanese government sources had revealed that China and Japan secretly reached a compromise on the Diaoyu Islands issue while Junichiro Koizumi was Japanese prime minister. The Japanese government sources said Japan agreed in the deal not to detain Chinese citizens setting foot on the Islands while China promised to restrain Chinese vessels who voluntarily defend the Diaoyu from approaching the isles, according to reports."There is absolutely no secret agreement. It is nothing but a slanderous rumor which not only misleads the public but further jeopardizes the political mutual trust between China and Japan. The Japanese side must take upon itself the consequences for this (rumor)," said Ma when responding to a journalist's question.Ma said the Diaoyu Islands are, and have been since ancient times, an integral part of Chinese territory. The Chinese government's stance in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity has always been unambiguous and unwavering, he added.
