SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego lawmakers responded Friday to President Donald Trump’s comments about border wall construction and funding as the government shutdown stretched into day 13. Trump declared he could keep parts of the government closed for "months or even years" as he and Democratic leaders failed in a second closed-door meeting to resolve his demand for billions of dollars for a border wall with Mexico. “We did a lot of wall in San Diego,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “They wanted it very badly.” Trump cited concerns about the U.S.-Mexico border, including entry by terrorists, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. San Diego County’s congressional representatives emailed comments to 10News regarding the president’s statements. “San Diegans view our proximity to Mexico as an opportunity, not a threat, and we recently celebrated building a bridge between our two countries – not a wall – a bridge with adequate customs staffing so people can travel back and forth easily, and legally,” wrote Rep. Scott Peters. “San Diegans want smart, innovative border security – not the wasteful wall that President Trump wants to build as a monument to himself.” Congressman Duncan Hunter, San Diego County’s lone Republican representative, issued a statement through his public information officer. “Congressman Hunter believes President Trump needs to stand strong on the issue of border security and his description of it as a ‘national emergency’ means he has a firm grasp of its importance. A border barrier is absolutely necessary, some of which is already in existence which many in Congress initially supported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria says the city's convention center shelter for the homeless will be funded through at least the first month of 2021.Gloria said in a release that he's directing staff to provide funding using money previously slated for shelter operations in November and December that wasn't spent due to cost-saving measures and other factors, as well as a state grant specifically for funding homelessness-related services."I am committed to protecting our homeless neighbors from COVID-19 while keeping a focus on connecting them to long-term housing," Gloria said. Since April, more than 11,200 coronavirus tests have been given at the shelter to residents and staff. The shelter has seen a total of 190 positive tests, including 170 residents and 20 volunteers or staff members, according to the city.Those residents who test positive are immediately moved from the shelter to an off-site hotel managed by the county for public health use. 2326

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Regis Philbin, the long-time talk show host who holds the Guiness Book world record for most hours on television, returned to his roots Wednesday with a visit to 10News."This was the beginning of it all," Philbin said upon beginning his tour. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is no longer abnormally dry, according to a new report from the U.S. Drought Monitor. The report shows a large swath of Southern California having no drought. Most of California, however, remains abnormally dry, according to the report. According to the National Weather Service, the San Diego International Airport measured nearly four inches of rain since October 1st. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. Results for potential cases of COVID-19 will now be available within 24 to 48 hours, health officials say.
