SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid sky high gas prices and commuting headaches, more San Diego commuters are turning to telecommuting.Like many, Maria Parra's day at work begins with a cup of coffee.  The difference is her coffee is brewed in the kitchen at her City Heights home, feet away from her office.  Parra, who does coding for Sharp Health, started telecommuting in 2010."It only took me about a week to realize how great a situation it was," said Parra.RELATED: How to convince your employer to allow you to telecommuteParra says she saves thousands every year in commuting costs, from gas to wear and tear on her car.   Gone are those rush hour headaches."The time you are saving and the stress you are alleviating is great," said Parra.According to SANDAG, the average San Diegan spends the equivalent of 22 work days every year commuting to work. For full-time telecommuters, that's like getting back 22 vacation days.  Those benefits are now fueling a local telecommuting boom.  According to just released numbers from Carlsbad-based Global Workplace Analytics, about 65,000 San Diegans now work at least half their hours from home.  That's up nearly 190% in the past decade.  Nationally, that increase is 140%.Kate Lister is president of Global Workplace Analytics, which develops flexible workplace strategies for employers.  She says more and more employers are taking a close look at telecommuting."Employers can save big money in terms of productivity, lower turnover, lower absenteeism, and of course, real estate savings.  They don't have to have a seat for every one," said Lister.Among those employers is Sharp Health, boasting more than 670 employees in its telecommuting program, a 16.5% increase from the year before.RELATED: Longer drive could save San Diegans on housingLister says in all, 4.6% of the San Diego workplace telecommutes, which ranks among the top 10 cities in the U.S.  1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at Shoal Creek Elementary School in Carmel Mountain is being honored as the 10News Classroom Hero.Throughout her teaching career, Lisa Ransom's message to her first graders has been: aim high and give back. “My goal for them is to see what they can do and to put away what they can’t do and work on moving forward,” said Ransom. In her first grade class, she puts extra emphasis on reading and writing, skills she believes are crucial for the children's future and development. “Knowing they are able to read is one thing but knowing that they are able to read to understand and read to learn, and to write to communicate ideas and thoughts. It’s something that is going to carry them throughout their lives,” said Ransom. Ransom’s love for her students is why Cate O’Reilly, a parent who has had three of her children in Mrs. Ransom’s class throughout the years, nominated Lisa Ransom as our Classroom Hero. “Everything she does is really about building up their self-esteem and helping them navigate through this tricky first grade,” O'Reilly said. But it’s her student’s excitement to learn that motivates her to teach for years to come. “I start to tear up because it just means so much to me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A well-known San Diego restaurant plans to close for good this July. Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant will close its Mission Valley restaurant on July 16, 2019, according to paperwork filed by the company. Although no reason was given for the closure, 79 employees are expected to lose their jobs. The layoff notice was filed by the company on June 5 and says, in part, that the company will “continue the employment of all employees through the sixtieth day after the date of this notice, and all employees will be paid your regular wages and benefits through that date.”The brewery and restaurant first opened in 1988 in Palo Alto before expanding in 1999. Gordon Biersch currently operates 35 restaurants in the U.S., though it’s unclear if any other locations plan to close. 808

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who mailed out her state tax payment at a post office in Mira Mesa got a big shock a few days later. A week ago, Barbara Reynolds wrote out a 9 check for her state taxes. She drove to her post office on Mira Mesa Boulevard and dropped it off around noon."I thought it was safer to come here," said Reynolds.Days later, she got a call. A bank teller in San Juan Capistrano was looking at her check, but it looked a lot of different. The amount had been hiked a bit to 9. Instead of the state, the new payee was the name 'Marco Antonio Lopez Ramirez."The teller shredded the check, suspicious because a man hoping to deposit the check had presented a dubious driver's license and an odd-looking check. As in other stolen check cases, the thief likely used a chemical solution to dissolve away the ink and 'wash' the check, before filling in the blanks."Very disappointed. It wasn't a good feeling at all," said Reynolds.The feeling was made worse because of how that check was stolen. One possible cause is 'fishing,' where thieves use a simple string - connected to something like a rodent glue trap - to fish mail out of a collection boxIn this case, Reynolds says the stolen check included her social security number."I'm very worried about identity theft. I won't be using the mail for future important documents or payments," said Reynolds.Reynolds filed a report with police and the Postal Inspection Office. A Postal Inspection spokesperson says they haven't seen a surge in mail thefts at that location. 1553

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspicious backpack prompted a bomb squad response downtown Tuesday afternoon. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. just outside the federal building on the 800 block of Front Street. Authorities say a security guard at the building saw a man acting suspiciously before tossing a military backpack into a planter. After using special equipment to examine the bag, the bomb squad found only personal items inside the bag. The FBI said it sent agents to the scene, but that the "matter is being led by Federal Protective Services." 596
