The flood gates are now closed in New Orleans as the city braces for Tropical Storm Barry.Authorities have warned people in low-lying parts of Louisiana to evacuate. Rescue crews and National Guard troops are stationed across the city and state, preparing to assist in boat rescues. Earlier this week, heavy rain flooded the street and it may just be a preview of what’s to come as Barry gets stronger and moves closer to land. The storm is expected to make landfall in Louisiana early Saturday. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell urged residents and tourists to shelter in place starting at 8 p.m. CT Friday. “So, I dunno what’s gonna happen,” says New Orleans business owner Sarah Corsiatto. “I think we are gonna get a lot of water in the city.” Corsiatto says she won't leave town, but she is staying with friends to be closer to her coffee shop."I’m gonna try to be open as long as I can,” she says. She says as the storm moves in, she’ll secure her shop with tape and sandbags. Nearby, some historic French Quarter businesses are prepping for the storm by putting out sandbags. Barry could strengthen to a hurricane, but it’s not the high winds that have residents and officials worried, says Benjamin Scott, with the National Weather Service. “It's the large amount of water,” he explains. “Take a look behind me. This is the Mississippi River, already strained from a season of flooding."Scott says the number one threat will be the heavy flooding and rainfall. The Mississippi River this time of year is usually at 6 to 8 feet, but right now, the river sits at 16 feet. The forecast is calling for 15 inches of rain in the city and possibly 25 inches elsewhere. Tourists in New Orleans are taking the warnings from officials seriously. Jacques Desormiere and his friends say they aren’t taking chances. They spent the day stocking up on essentials. “Water, we have a bunch of nuts and things,” he says. “We can cook and eat without electricity.” Desormiere says he and his friends will likely wait out the storm. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Video games are not just for the young anymore – they’re for the young at heart. People over the age of 50 are one of the fastest growing group of video game players in the country and that is translating into big bucks. It’s a trend that can be seen at the Hayes Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. That is where afternoons are a time to get up and strike in video game bowling. “It’s fun,” said 62-year-old Karen Glymph. “It brings you up, makes you laugh.” Glymph plays to win, even though video games are not what this generation grew up with. “We didn’t have this then,” she said. “Most everybody wanted to go outside. Now, they want to stay and play video games.” That is especially true for seniors, according to a new study by the AARP. “Gaming and technology – that's where we see a bigger shift,” said Alison Bryant, AARP senior vice president of research. How big is the shift? In 2016, about 40 million people over the age of 50 played video games monthly. By 2019, that number soared to more than 50 million. That means 44% of all seniors are now regularly playing video games. All of this is turning into big business, because the amount of money seniors spent on video games last year alone totaled billion. “I hope that the gaming industry is going to start taking a look at these numbers and saying, ‘wait a minute. There's really an opportunity here to increase our market share’ and to develop games that might be even more exciting for older adults,” Bryant said. Back at the senior center, Karen Glymph said she could never have imagined doing this in her younger years. “I really had no idea that I was going to play a video game and move my whole body,” she said. “So, it's like ‘whoa!’”It is an excitement for video games that’s contagious for an older generation, too. 1836

A change is coming to some people’s life and health insurance policies that will make them more expensive. Prudential recently announced it will consider e-cigarette users the same as traditional smokers. Smokers pay on average about 50% more per year for life insurance. Depending on the policy, that’s between 0 and 0 more.Some other companies were already charging vapers more. The president of Consumer Watchdog, Jamie Court, says he doesn’t necessarily disagree with the practice. “Well you know I’m no fan of the insurance industry but I think they're probably right in this circumstance and you know vaping is a relatively unknown quantity we don’t have any longitudinal studies to show what happens in 10-20-30-40 years to the lungs of people who vape,” said Court. “But there has been some evidence that people have significant scarring.”Court says it’s a little more of a gray area when it comes to health insurance. Right now, plans under the Affordable Care Act don’t charge e-cigarette and tobacco users the same. Some states don’t allow smokers to be charged more. At the same time, the Insurance Information Institute reports some companies have vaping in the non-smoking category because there isn’t enough data yet on the health effects.
