CAPE CORAL, Fla., — A Florida utilities crew discovered a fossil archeologists now believe may be of a woolly mammoth or mastodon.The crew was digging in a trench 17 feet below the ground in Cape Coral last month.The crew turned over the fossil to the city which brought in archeologists to assess it.Robert Carr with the Archeological and Historical Conservancy says the fossil fragment was probably part of the mammoth’s humorous bone, or upper arm.The fossil is roughly one foot long and 10 inches wide.He estimates the fossil is 12,500 to 250,000 years old, based on similar discoveries.According to the report, during that time "glacial retreat led to the formation of savannas across Florida and herds of mammoth, bison, antelope, and horse roamed the peninsula."According to the Florida Museum of Natural History (FMNH), there are only two recorded mammoth fossil sites in Lee County.However, Carr believes there may be other fossil beds within the city with the remains of other extinct mammals.The City of Cape Coral plans to donate the fossil to the Cape Coral Historical Museum in the coming months. 1138

CEDAR PARK, TX — Three police officers were shot Sunday while responding to a call in Cedar Park, Texas, according to police.The three officers suffered non-fatal injuries while responding to the call on Sunday afternoon and are currently stable at a local hospital.The shooting began an hours-long standoff that lasted throughout the evening on Sunday and well into Monday morning. Two hostages were released from the home on Monday morning at about 8 a.m. CT. Caregivers already deal with a lot of stress and it's rising.The Caregiver Action Network has been seeing more calls coming into its free help desk recently. It says one out of every three has something to do with a challenge raised by the pandemic.“By the end of the call, I actually will hear them breathing like a deep breath of like sigh of relief almost and that they're actually feeling better at the end of the call, having been able to express some of their thoughts, some of their worries,” said Jennifer Piscitello, caregiving expert with the Caregiver Help Desk.Piscitello says people calling in are expressing a lot of pandemic fatigue. They're overwhelmed, because they don't have the same resources or outlets they had previously.The pandemic may also be keeping loved ones at home longer.“Aging in place has gone from being a desire, a wish, to almost a mandate or something that really has to happen because families are just afraid to have their elderly loved ones put in a nursing home,” said John Schall, CEO of the Caregiver Action Network.Schall says we need more training and financial support for the caregivers in this situation.The expansion of telehealth has been helpful, but one challenge is when caregivers can't be present when that virtual visit is happening, like they would be with an in-person doctor's visit.Experts at the help desk are making sure caregivers focus on their self-care now more than ever. CARSON (CNS) - San Diego State is scheduled to begin in its coronavirus-delayed football season tonight against UNLV at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, its home for this season and next as SDCCU Stadium is demolished and Aztec Stadium is built.San Diego State initially planned to make 2020 its final season at SDCCU Stadium, where it had played since 1967, but being able to expedite its demolition and construction of Aztec Stadium and the stadium's condition when the university took ownership of it from the city prompted a change of plans, according to athletic director John David Wicker.``The building was not in very good condition when we took it over,'' Wicker said at a Sept. 15 news conference announcing the decision. ``The amount of effort and dollars to get it up to speed to have people able to come in was somewhat challenging.''The university considered a site in San Diego to play its games until the planned opening of Aztec Stadium in 2022, ``but when you think about a Division 1 football experience and all of the different things that go along with that there wasn't a venue in town that was going to be consistently available for us to play in,'' Wicker said.``We just didn't think there were any venues in San Diego that could satisfy what we wanted to present for our student-athletes and also our fans,'' Wicker said.``As you think about some of the things around the game, our television partners and having the ability to come in and set up and do the television experience we want to put out led us to where we are today.''Fans will not be allowed to attend Saturday's game because of state health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic.
