BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. The turnover at the Shanghai Stock Exchange was 154 billion yuan, showing investors' heartened confidence in economic recovery.Thursday's official figures revealed that the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector stood at 55.1 percent in March, up 3.1 percentage points from February, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.

HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China's gasoline prices will be cut by 230 yuan (33.7 U.S. dollars) per tonne and diesel prices by 220 yuan per tonne from Tuesday, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Monday.The price cuts came after a record high in price hikes in April. The previous price cut was in September 2009.Before the adjustment, the benchmark price of gasoline was 7,420 yuan per tonne and diesel 6,680 yuan per tonne.Cao Changqing, head of price department of the NDRC, said the adjustment was "timely and in a proper amount" in response to recent changes in the international crude oil prices.International crude oil prices had been rising before May, when they began to decline, the NDRC statement said. The recent drops had amounted to 4 percent, meeting price adjustment conditions, it added.Cao said the move was also based on the global and domestic economic sitations and oil supply and demand as well as the country's pricing mechanism.In 2009, China adopted an oil pricing mechanism that allows the NDRC to adjust retail fuel prices when the international crude oil price changes by more than 4 percent over 22 straight working daysThe government would raise benchmark prices for domestically-produced onshore natural gas by 230 yuan per thousand cubic meters, or 24.9 percent, to 1,155 yuan per thousand cubic meters because of relatively low prices and strong demand, he said.
