(KGTV) - The spookiest time of the year at Disneyland isn’t always Halloween. In 2019, it comes in August, as the Haunted Mansion marks its 50th anniversary. Disney is honoring the milestone with “The Haunted Mansion: Celebrating 50 Years of Retirement Unliving.” The after-hours events will include special entertainment, character encounters, photo opportunities, themed food and drinks, unique merchandise, and what Disney describes as “a few supernatural surprises.” Event highlights include: *A 13th Hour Celebration kick-off along the Rivers of America. The “Swinging Wake” will feature Madame Leota of crystal ball fame conjuring the festivities. *Themed backdrops for photos with unlimited digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass pictures. *Limited-time Snapchat filters and event hashtags. *After-hours access to select attractions New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Frontierland and Adventureland. 1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment last week, according to weekly statistics from the Department of Labor.That's a slight uptick — about 20,000 additional claims — from the previous week's figures. Last week's report also indicated a slight increase in unemployment claims, the first increase in several months.Thursday's report marks the 19th straight week in which more than a million Americans have filed claims for unemployment. During that time, more than 51 million people have sought unemployment insurance.While figures are down significantly since a peak of about 6 million claims in March, they remain historically high.The report also comes as increased federal unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire. Negotiations are underway on Capitol Hill for another round fo COVID-19 stimulus, but Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on negotiations.In passing the HEROES Act, House Democrats proposed extending those increased benefits, totaling about 0 a week, through the end of the year and extending them to gig workers and self-employed people. However, Republicans said this week they'd like to reduce unemployment benefits to 0 a week for just the next couple of months — a proposal that leaves some deficit hawks in the party uncomfortable.While Democrats say increased benefits will offer assistance to those too sick to work and to those who cannot work if schools are closed due to the pandemic, Republicans argue that the 0 benefits discourage people from working.The report also comes as a surge of cases in the Sun Belt appears to be tapering off, but experts warn that the surge could move north to the Midwest in the weeks and days ahead. 1737

(KGTV) -- The National Transportation Safety Board ruled Tuesday that the lack of adequate oversight by Truth Aquatics Inc. led to a boat fire that killed 34 people off Santa Cruz Island last year.San Diegan Nicole Quitasol and four of her family members were among the 34 killed in the September 2019 blaze.The NTSB said Tuesday that the fire aboard the Conception diving boat is one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in the United States.“The message is clean up your act, follow your procedures,” said board chairman Robert Sumwalt while speaking about Truth Aquatics Inc.The investigation revealed the 33 passengers and one crewmember killed were in the bunkroom and unable to escape before being overcome with smoke.Investigators told the NTSB some of the victims had on shoes, indicating that they were awake and trying to get out at the time of the fire.Smoke inhalation was listed as the cause of death for all victims.All 34 were two decks below the area where five crewmembers were asleep in the upper deck. The five crewmembers survived.The NTSB agreed on 18 key findings in the investigation, including that the lack of required roving night watchmen and lack of smoke detectors in the salon area of the boat delayed the detection of the fire by crew members, leading to the high number of fatalities.While the fire's exact cause was not determined, the NTSB said it could have possibly been caused by charging electronics and lithium-ion batteries.As a result of its investigation, the NTSB made ten new safety recommendations for the U.S. Coast Guard and others in the industry. Some of the recommendations including a requirement that all newly constructed vessels with overnight accommodations have smoke detectors in all accommodation spaces and that the vessels provide a secondary means of escape into a different space than the primary exit so that a single fire should not affect both escape hatches.“The recommendations that we’ve issued today if implemented that’s the key, if implemented, would reduce the risk of future passenger vessel fires going undetected it would ensure that escape routes exit to different spaces improving the chances for survival for passengers and crew,” said Sumwalt. 2229

A 17-year-old is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the head by a rubber bullet. Caprice Wade said her son Lazerick Wade, 17, went several blocks away from their home in Milwaukee to check in on a gathering of people outside a home. Minutes later, she had to rush him to a nearby hospital.“My heart sunk to the bottom of my feet,” Caprice Wade said. “I didn’t know what to do.”Cell phone video shows Lazerick in a blue hoodie moments before the shot was fired just feet away from officers.
