INDIANAPOLIS — A man who had to be rescued from a retention pond on Indianapolis' northeast side Monday after he jumped in to rescue his dog has died. The incident happened in The Masters apartment complex at about 11:30 a.m., near Masters Road and E. 91st Street.The Indianapolis Fire Department says the man went after one of his dogs when the pup went into the icy water.The victim, a man in his 20s, was not able to get out of the water.Two residents of the complex saw the man trying to rescue his dog and tried to help. Both fell into the water but were able to get out and were treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. The victim was pulled from the water by a rescue team and rushed to St. Vincent Hospital where he later died. His identity has not been released. The victim's dog is expected to be OK.  859

It is the silence that John Christian Phifer loves the most as he walks around the 120 acres of a nature preserve in Gallatin, Tennessee. Many of the people buried here were wrapped in quilts or buried in beds of wildflowers.It’s a simpler way to say goodbye, and in recent months, this type of burial is gaining popularity."I think with COVID, one of the things everyone has done is they’ve started thinking about making a plan," Phifer said as he walked through one of the wooded paths.Phifer works for Larkspur Conservation, a nonprofit that describes itself as Tennessee's first nature preserve for natural burials. On this hallowed ground, only green burials are allowed to take place.The pandemic has led to an increase in the number of people looking at natural burial options. Natural burials are also giving families a way to grieve and mourn safely outside during the COVID-19 pandemic."I think COVID has heightened folks’ awareness of how important it is to make a plan. Families can still have a burial, families can still have a gathering, they can come together with their loved one," Phifer said.There is also a cost aspect that's driving the increased rise in natural burials. As many American families struggle financially, natural burial offers an end-of-life option that's around ,000. It’s much less than a traditional burial, which usually runs around ,000.There’s also an environmental draw to all of this. Every year, American bury about 73,000 kilometers of hardwood boards, along with 58,000 tons of steel and 1.5 million tons of concrete. Natural burials are often much safer for the environment"It’s not going to be for everyone, and that’s OK,” explained Phifer. “We’re just another tool in working through the end of life.”And while planning for the end is never easy, Phifer sees this as one place people can start. 2193

  

It's in a mother's nature to help her children, but one group of moms is doing what it can to help students across the nation.Eleven mothers from metro Washington, D.C. banded together to find free housing for students coming to March for Our Lives on Saturday. The march is a student-led demonstration for school safety and stricter gun safety laws, created after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting in Florida killed 17 people in February.These moms know students have the march planning under control, so they created March for Our Lives Lodging to support their efforts. 591

  

It’s harvest time for the wine industry on California’s Central Coast.At Wolff Vineyards in Edna Valley, owner Jean-Pierre Wolff is dealing with all kinds of issues.“Today in my vineyard, it’s over 100 degrees,” he said. “The impacts of the fires and the smoke taint really add another level of challenge.”These environmental challenges are now costing Wolff financially. Some customers canceled their orders because of concerns about nearby wildfires impacting his grapes.“Negative effects can manifest themselves later on after fermentation and during barrel aging,” Wolff said. “So, they basically backed out of agreements.”Millions of acres have recently burned across California, Oregon and Washington, areas that produce 85% of the country’s wine.“It’s the first time in recent history that fires have impacted so many different wine grape growing regions,” said Anita Oberholster, Ph.D. with the University of California, Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology.She says America’s wine tourism is already struggling due to COVID-19 and that these fires could cost the industry even more through job loss and damaged products.“The problem with this year is the fires started much earlier than our harvest season,” Oberholster said. “About 10% of the grapes have been harvested and the rest were still on the vine. 2020 is not our year.”For many wineries, smoke taint of grapes is so severe, there might not be a 2020 vintage.“The 2020 vintage is going to be one where we’ll have a limited amount of high-quality wines,” Wolff said.While Wolff is working to keep his products from going down the drain and letting his wine go to waste, he says many in the industry are dealing with fire fatigue and that an increase in cost linked to these fires could be felt in years to come.“2023 probably particularly with reds is when impacts will be felt,” he said. “We’ll bounce back, but we’ll be a little black and blue.” 1930
