SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego man who claimed he punched a San Diego Police officer in self-defense was convicted on four counts Friday.Frederick Jefferson was arrested February 3 at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. At the time, police were trying to disperse a crowd which had gathered as two groups debated the historical significance of the park. Barricades were in place, and dozens of officers were standing by to keep order.During a jailhouse interview with 10News, Jefferson said a San Diego Police officer asked him to get out the street. However, Jefferson said he didn’t want to walk with the protestors.RELATED: San Diego man claims he punched officer in self defenseJefferson said he tried talking to the officer but admitted he did not get out of the street.“When they got out of the car, I continued walking,” he said. “I told them I said, ‘I’m just going to keep walking on’ and as I kept walking on they came up behind me.”RELATED: Video: Demonstration between groups at Chicano Park becomes violentJefferson said an officer grabbed his shirt and swung a billy club.“I was afraid that if this dude got back a hold of me he was going to go town on me with the billy club," Jefferson said.San Diego Police Lt. Scott Wahl said Jefferson started fighting first.Jefferson admitted to 10News that he hit the officer twice in the face.“I swung and hit him to put distance between us and then he swung again and I swung again because I could not let this dude grab me.”Police said Jefferson broke bones in the officer’s face.“It was a very serious injury. It could have been much worse,” said Lt. Wahl.“If he got injured like really badly like they’re saying, I’m sorry for that,” offered Jefferson.Jefferson was convicted of four crimes, including force likely to cause great bodily injury on a police officer and resisting a police officer with force or violence 1905

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three people were injured in a shooting in east San Diego on Saturday.San Diego Police say three people were shot in the area of Euclid Ave. and Home Ave. in City Heights before 9:30 p.m.SDPD did not say whether a suspect was sought or provide more details on the condition of the victims.ABC 10News is following this breaking news. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County District Attorney’s office on Friday released body camera, surveillance, and cell phone video connected with two officer-involved shootings and three in-custody death incidents. The video is being released now as part of the DA's review of the incident.In each of the encounters, DA’s office investigators cleared the law enforcement parties of criminal wrongdoing. Lemon Grove One of the officer-involved shootings occurred at Del Taco at 7060 Broadway in Lemon Grove on Jan. 5. A witness said Adolfo Gonzalez pointed a gun at customers inside. When deputies arrived, they told Gonzalez to put his hands up but he immediately pulled a handgun from under the table and pointed it at deputies, the district attorney’s office said. All three deputies on the scene opened fire, killing Gonzalez. Investigators later determined that Gonzalez suffered from mental illness and had recently purchased a handgun. The day of the shooting, Gonzalez told a family member he wanted to get in a shoot-out with police, according to investigators. Gonzalez had a blood alcohol level of .25 at the time of his death. City Heights San Diego Police received calls in February about a partially nude man walking in traffic and falling down, possibly being struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived to find Lawayne Horne, 44, disoriented. A friend said Horne was under the influence of PCP. During their assessment, Horne fell on the pavement and struck his head, then began rolling around and screaming, investigators said. Horne began biting the flesh from his hands and fingers, according to the report. Officers placed Horne in handcuffs which were replaced by soft restraints when paramedics arrived. Horne went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance and died at the hospital a week later. The Medical Examiner determined Horne died of meth and PCP intoxication with hypertensive cardiovascular disease as a contributing factor. Little Italy The struggle between a man who ran naked through Little Italy in Oct. 2018 and San Diego Police was also reviewed. Witnesses reported seeing 39-year-old Vito Vitale running naked in the street. Police said Vitale was sweating profusely, very animated, and disoriented. An officer handcuffed him, at which point Vitale began struggling and the two fell to the sidewalk. Witnesses attempted to hold Vitale’s legs in place as two additional officers arrived. Vitale “exhibited significant strength, pushing one officer up with his legs,” investigators said. Vitale’s pulse weakened and his breathing became shallow as paramedics arrived. Vitale died later that night at UCSD Medical Center. Toxicology tests showed Vitale had cocaine and cannabinoids in his blood. The Medical Examiner determined his causes of death were the effects of cocaine and physiologic stress of restraint was a contributing factor. Del Mar Also reviewed by district attorney’s office investigators was the shooting of a man who fired into the air during the Ice Cube concert at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Sept. 2, 2018. Prosecutors said Daniel Elizarraras was upset he could not get tickets to the sold-out concert and fired two rounds into the air near a ticket booth. The deputy deployed his Taser on Elizarraras with little effect, investigators said. After Elizarraras refused to drop his gun, a deputy saw him lower his weapon, at which point the deputy shot Elizarraras in the torso and shoulder, the district attorney’s office said. Elizarraras survived the shooting and later pleaded guilty, receiving a three-year prison term. Fallbrook Investigators examined evidence in the case of Marco Napoles-Rosales, 29, after he trespassed on the property of a Fallbrook Circle K in August 2018. A deputy who tried to remove Napoles-Rosales said he became combative, biting down on the deputy’s thumb and not letting go. A deputy used a Taser on Napoles-Rosales without effect. He was placed in a safety restraint known as a wrap. Paramedics arrived and said Napoles-Rosales was showing signs of excited delirium and extreme strength, investigators said. Napoles-Rosales became unresponsive in the ambulance and died the next day at the hospital. An autopsy showed he died due to sudden cardiopulmonary arrest associated with meth intoxication and physical exertion during restraint. 4325

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a sign inside Hillcrest's Industrial Grind Coffee that reads, "our first, funky little coffee shop opened in 2011 - not too far from where you're standing right now."It's a place that shaped barista Jennifer Bizjak."It's where I learned everything I know about coffee," she said.That original location is a third of a mile away, near the northwest corner of Park Boulevard and University Avenue. It's now shuttered, and untouched. It's part of a complex that includes small homes and mom-and-pop businesses - one owner said she's preparing to leave after 17 years.Real Estate investment group Diversyfund bought the complex in June for .65 million. It plans to replace it with an 80,000 square foot mixed-use building that includes 58 units, including 6 affordable apartments.Shayan Rajabi, an investment analyst for the group, said the new complex is designed with sensitivity to the neighborhood. He said it would bring more housing to a region with a sever under-supply, plus affordable units. He added the building would feature a coffee shop, or microbrew, that would complement the community."I think the scale of our building is comfortable as it adds density without overloading the area. It’s the kind of scale that they do in German cities, which are known to have very people-oriented building codes," he said. That development would be near the northwest corner of Park and University, where a recent city request is now leading to concerns of future overdevelopment.In February, a city planner asked the Uptown Community Planning Group to support rezoning a little more than an acre at the northwest corner of Park and University to allow more intense development than what is in the recently approved community plan.Board member Mat Wahlstrom said the planner gave very few specifics.  "He simply said that a stakeholder, which, I would assume is the property owner, approached us to see about having this done," Wahlstrom said.Rayabi said the Diversyfund project fits within current zoning and that the group did not ask or need a re-zone for the project.Peggy Shapiro, who owns the strip mall that's actually on the corner - which includes the Medical Center Pharmacy - also said she has no redevelopment plans. She added she was unaware of the proposed rezone.On Thursday, City spokesman Arian Collins said REAL Development submitted a rezone application for the properties at 3906 and 3922 Park Boulevard, to accommodate a 58-unit mixed use complex with affordable housing. He added that the application has since been changed for a foundation and podium, but no permits have been issued. Bizjak said she's concerned about extra development hurting Hillcrest's parking situation."I can't even imagine how far they want to go or how that would even make sense," she said.The Planning Commission is going to consider the rezone at its meeting March 15.  2966
