A study that was pre-published on Wednesday indicates that a coronavirus mutation is causing the virus to be more contagious, a study authored by the Houston Methodist Hospital found. The study, however, concluded that the virus is not more potent.The study examined 5,000 COVID-19 strains from the Houston metro area. The researchers said that while this amino acid caused “significantly higher virus loads,” this did not increase the potency of the virus.“We found little evidence of a significant relationship between virus genotypes and altered virulence, stressing the linkage between disease severity, underlying medical conditions, and host genetics,” the study said. “Some regions of the spike protein - the primary target of global vaccine efforts - are replete with amino acid replacements, perhaps indicating the action of selection," according to a summary of the findings.The researchers said that the study is intended to help scientists understand the composition and trajectory of future infection waves.It is important to note that the study has not been peer reviewed, and was limited to cases in the Houston area. 1326

A ventilated COVID-19 patient in Utah couldn't use his voice to thank his nurses for caring for him, so he thanked them the only other way he knew how — with his violin.According to a press release from Intermountain Healthcare, Grover Wilhelmsen contracted COVID-19 and was placed on an invasive ventilator after arriving at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden. Because the ventilator prevented him from speaking, he communicated with nurses and doctors with paper and pen.Wilhelmsen is a retired orchestra teacher and has been playing music his entire life. At one point during his ICU stay, he asked one of his nurses if she'd like to hear him play."Toward the middle of my shift he wrote, 'You know, I really want to play here at the hospital. What do you think about my wife bringing in my violin and viola?'" his nurse, Ciara Sase, said. "I said to him, 'We'd love to hear you play, it would bring so much brightness and positivity into our environment.'"It took some planning, but eventually, the team at McKay-Dee decided it would be safe for Wilhelmsen to play as long as Sase were in the room to make sure he didn't disturb any of the equipment that was allowing him to breathe.Wilhelmsen's wife, Diana, eventually brought both his violin and viola to the hospital. Soon, he was filling the ICU with the comforting sounds of his music."It brought tears to my eyes. For all the staff to see a patient doing this while intubated was unbelievable," Sase saod. "Even though he was so sick, he was still able to push through. You could see how much it meant to him. Playing kind of helped to soothe his nerves and brought him back to the moment."And he didn't play just once — Intermountain Healthcare says he played for several hours on back-to-back days. Sase added that Wilhelmsen would play for up to two-and-a-half hours before he became ill and required sedation."It was honestly shocking to be there when he picked up the violin. It felt like I was in a dream," said Matt Harper, another nurse at McKay-Dee. "I'm used to patients being miserable or sedated while being intubated, but Grover made an unfortunate situation into something positive. This was by far one of my favorite memories in the ICU that I've had. It was a small light in the darkness of COVID.""He truly is special and made a mark on all of us," Sase said. "When I started to cry in the room after he was done playing, he wrote to me, 'Quit crying. Just smile,' and he smiled at me."Wilhelmsen ultimately spent more than a month in the ICU. However, he's since been moved to a long-term care facility and is expected to recover. His wife says he's currently too weak to play but hopes to resume his musical talents as soon as he gathers his strength. 2731

A reason some experts think the U.S. has had trouble containing the virus is because states have managed it differently. Inconsistency has jeopardized safety, according to the National Safety Council.“This pandemic is not finished by a long shot, so that's another reason why we put this report out when we did is because we can learn from this,” said Lorraine Martin, President and CEO of the National Safety Council.The council looked at five areas in how states have addressed the pandemic: Employer guidelines, testing, contact tracing, mental health, and substance use and roadway safety.They say states struggled with communication.“We also found while some states had good intentions, just getting the data to people in a very clear and concise way and making it available at people's fingertips, that also was sometimes a struggle,” said Martin.Testing and contact tracing need work in many areas.The report highlights another issue – overdoses are increasing in 40 states.“We had a good year last year where we started to bring some of that down,” said Martin. “It’s headed in the wrong direction again. We can all understand why there’s a lot of stress, restrictions getting the support that you need but it’s really important that we look at the states that have done this well.”Overall, states were put in three categories: On track, lagging and off-track. A Valrico, Florida mom is sharing her experience on social media after she said she was asked asked to wait outside the Plant City DMV office with her infant daughter.Liz Gatley, a stay-at-home mother of three girls, said she was asked by a representative at the Plant City Tag Office to take her one-year-old daughter outside or come back another day. In a picture on Facebook you can see at least four young children, one in a stroller, and the mothers waiting outside the office. Gatley said her daughter, as well as the other children were not being disruptive and said she's a firm believer of taking them outside if they were. In the post, Gatley wrote, "I was so mad but I was also embarrassed and confused," she said. She went on to say, "for you to embarrass me and be extremely rude, unapologetic and not understanding the fact many moms are stay at home moms with little to no help, is what bothers me."Gatley said she and the mothers stood outside with no bench or air conditioning as they waited two hours to be seen at the office. At the end of the post she said, "if you have children, go to another location!"Doug Belden with the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's spoke with Tampa-based WFTS on Friday afternoon. He apologized to Gatley and the experience at the Plant City office noting it was not the friendly and efficient policy that is in place.Belden said he called Gatley directly and told her he would meet with her at her earliest convenience, even throughout the weekend to help get the facts of what happened. Belden said he is outraged that Gatley experienced this at his office, and that children are always welcome in the offices across Hillsborough County.He went on to say that he will be looking into this employee, and taking appropriate measures -- and even went as far to say he plans to check with the landlord to see if they can install benches outside the office. We asked Belden if Gatley should have gone back inside, and he said "absolutely" adding if he found out about this situation at the time, he would have taken care of this immediately. Gatley said Belden was sincere in his apologies and plans to take him up on his offer of meeting with her as soon as possible.  2349

A university official said that Jerry Falwell Jr. has resigned as president of Liberty University Monday, according to media reports. But Falwell told a TV station in Virginia that he has not agreed to resign, and reports of his resignation are "completely false."Falwell was already on a leave of absence from the evangelical Lynchburg, Va school his father founded following a series of personal issues.Over the weekend, Falwell issued a lengthy statement disclosing the “emotional toll” an affair his wife had with a man was having on him. He says the man, identified by media reports as a former pool attendant and later a business partner of Falwell and his wife, threatened to reveal the relationship “to deliberately embarrass my wife, family, and Liberty University unless we agreed to pay him substantial monies.”In his statement, Falwell said he and his wife met the man she had an affair with during a vacation over eight years ago. The man was working at the hotel where the Falwells stayed, the statement said.“Shortly thereafter, Becki had an inappropriate personal relationship with this person, something in which I was not involved – it was nonetheless very upsetting to learn about,” Falwell said in the statement.
