While most people seek safety during danger, Ebonique Johnson actually hurries to the frontlines.“I’m running towards it because that’s where I’m needed the most,” said Johnson, a nursing student at Georgia State University in Atlanta.Set to graduate in December, she’s looking to land a job at an ICU.“I want to be where I’m needed,” Johnson said. “I want to help the COVID patients.”That help could come sooner or later depending on where she gets a job.Some states are waiving certain regulations and allowing nursing students to enter the workforce more easily. Other states, however, have prevented nursing students from working with COVID-19 patients altogether.“We can’t hit the pause button with what’s going on, nurses are needed now more than ever,” said Dr. Regena Spratling, associate dean for GSU’s school of nursing.She says coronavirus concerns have limited student access to hospitals for hands-on clinical training and that more courses are now being taught online.“We’re really focusing on what they would be doing within the health care system as far as taking care of patients,” Spratling said. Despite changes, GSU is seeing more people looking to join its nursing program.For GSU nursing student Phillip Parnell, this pandemic is personal.“One of my older relatives recently passed away with the virus,” he said.The army veteran is now making his second career his first priority.“When it hits home, it’s a different level of intensity,” Parnell said.The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the health care industry needs more than 200,000 new nurses each year through 2026 just to replace retiring nurses.“Although we never thought we would see a pandemic in our lifetime, it’s here,” Johnson said.GSU students are happy to be leading the next generation of nurses while also fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines.“We answer the call to be there for people,” Johnson said. “It’s our time to show up.” 1925

Ron DeSantis was interrupted by a protester who called for DeSantis' resignation.Video from the press conference shows the protester yelling over DeSantis, accusing him of "falsifying information" and having "no plan" to combat the pandemic."Shame on you!" the protester said.He was later led out of the room by security. When the COVID-19 pandemic first prompted shelter-in-place restrictions, daycares across the country quickly saw families withdraw their children from their centers. Many lost valuable tuition dollars that keeps their doors open."We've done the best we can in staying open and supporting our community. We are a locally private-owned school so our enrollment really depends on the survival of the school and we’re struggling. I mean, as probably all childcare centers are, we’re struggling with enrollment, we’re struggling with our numbers," says Debbie Bradford, the director of education at Milton Montessori in Georgia.Bradford says the last few months have been very challenging as many families are worried about the coronavirus."The (coronavirus) numbers are on the rise so it’s definitely affecting the end of our school year, our summer and as we look to relaunch in August, we still see light enrollment," says Bradford.The school, which has two locations, has been able to stay open due to a number of parents who are essential workers. Bradford says, "These are front-line families. Some of them are workers on the front line and some of them are workers at home but need the income to make ends meet for our families."Primrose Schools has more than 400 locations across the country, providing infant daycare through private kindergarten. Primrose says the pandemic has dropped enrollment numbers at their facilities significantly."What we are seeing across the country is a very unsettling situation, where a lot of the family home cares that used to be accessible to families are closing. And the childcare centers, those individually owned and operated childcare centers, because of the shelter in place situation, many of them haven't been able to survive them," says Jo Kirchner, the CEO of Primrose Schools.Kirchner has been meeting regularly with other national daycare facilities and says many are concerned about the future of the childcare industry."It is a potential crisis that is going to escalate significantly in the next eight to 10 weeks as the districts decide what they're going to do," says Kirchner.One glimmer of hope is the boost of private kindergarten enrollment, which some parents have deemed a safer alternative than their local public school. Many hope private kindergarten enrollment can be kind of a saving grace for some private childcare centers."It will be somewhat of a saving grace in terms of bringing in base revenue to cover their fixed costs while we get through this pandemic and the families with the younger children will begin to come back,” Kirchner said.For Milton Montessori, the owners are hopeful they will be able to ride out this pandemic."We hope that at some point, families get comfortable with the new requirements for cleaning and for health and safety. And as things return to a normal, it's going to be a new normal," says Bradford.Bradford says they're hoping families start feeling safe enough to enroll their children and continue to support locally-owned childcare centers. 3055

While fans are not allowed to attend any MLB games in the shortened 2020 season, the Oakland Athletics came up with a brilliant way to "bring in" fans.The team unveiled its "Coliseum Cutouts" program, where A's fans will get a chance to display the cardboard cutout of themselves during games.The team's staff will try to fill the stands with the cutouts. Prices range from to 9 for each cutout. If a cutout in the program's foul ball zone gets hit with a foul ball, the A's will send the ball to that fan.Proceeds from this program will benefit the team's charity partners.With every purchase of a cutout, the fan will also receive two complimentary tickets to the A's first exhibition game at the Coliseum during the 2021 season. What color is your county and state?The Harvard Global Health Institute released an interactive map on Wednesday that shows the risk of contracting the coronavirus based on daily new cases per 100,000 people.Based on Harvard's guidelines, three US states need to implement stay-at-home orders, while an additional 13 should consider them. The map has four colors – green, yellow, orange and red – to demonstrate the risk by county and state. The map shows three states – Arizona, Florida and Mississippi – in the red for where infections are high. Just two states – Hawaii and Vermont—are in the green.
