At a time when 1.5 million new people are filing for unemployment, according to the Department of Labor, and there are about 20.5 million continued claims or people still on unemployment, some employers are finding it difficult to get employees back in the work force.“We have been operating throughout the pandemic. The majority of our industry partners never shut down,” said Peter Coleman.Coleman is the CEO of Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance (BNMA). Of the alliance’s 200 manufacturing companies, 80% were able to continue through the pandemic without layoffs, while 20% of the companies had some furloughs and layoffs.Now, as some of those companies are ready to bring back workers, they are running into three main reasons why some workers can’t or won’t come back.“I think one is health and safety. People who may be susceptible to disease are reluctant,” said Coleman. “Number two is childcare. We have reduced childcare accessibility and obviously schools are closed, and three the enhanced unemployment benefits.”In some cases, some people are making the same amount or even more money on unemployment. So, now some in Congress are pushing to end Pandemic Unemployment Assistance at the end of July and replace it with a temporary cash bonus for those who find a job.“Our industry, we are going to be hiring,” said Coleman. “We need to employ 10,000 people in western New York in the next five years, just to handle the retirees that are leaving the market.” 2119
AZUSA (CNS) - A 36-year-old homeless man, who authorities believe to be violent, is wanted by authorities for questioning Friday evening "in connection to starting" the 1,500-acre fire burning in Azusa, which investigators have determined to be arson.Osmin Palencia's last known residence is an encampment in the Azusa Canyon Riverbed, near the start of the Ranch 2 Fire, according to the Azusa Police Department.The Ranch 2 Fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. Thursday near North San Gabriel Canyon Road and North Ranch Road, according to the Azusa Police Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department, which called in a second- alarm response.A witness who lives in a riverbed near Mountain Cove told NBC4 an argument between two homeless men sparked the fire."There were two gentlemen in the back (of a homeless encampment) fighting and they were arguing over a bike and one guy said he'd burn the other guy out, and things got escalated to where the fire started," evacuee Jimmy Pockets told the station."Ran over to try to put it out but it just took off so quick."The blaze was 0% contained and had blackened about 1,500 acres as of 4:50 p.m. Friday, according to the Angeles National Forest. As scientists learn more about COVID-19, they are realizing that how people react to the virus could be based on the body's response to viruses like common colds.Meharry Medical College President Dr. James Hildreth says some studies are showing some individuals have T-cell responses to COVID-19 even though they never been exposed to it.He is talking about recent research revealing that some people may have immunity defenders called T-cells which could determine how their body reacts to COVID-19.According to the CDC, when the body fights an infection, the immune system remembers what it learned about how to protect the body against that disease.The body will retain a few specific T-cells known as memory cells - that will alert and help the immune system identify and produce antibodies to attack the foreign germ if it enters the body again."Viruses that look alike can sometimes elicit the same kinds of immune responses," said Hildreth.Hildreth says there are six strains of coronavirus that affect humans going back to the 1960s and some result in seasonal common colds.He says if you were infected with one of these viruses in the past it can determine the severity of the toll COVID-19 would take on your body now."There’s the possibility that a response to one of them gives you a partial to another because they have genetic similarities," said Hildreth.Hildreth says this doesn't mean a person has complete immunity to COVID-19."There’s strong evidence that you may not be immune to the virus, but you’ll have an immune response that recognizes SARS partially just because those two viruses look so much alike."Hildreth says this can help with treatments and even vaccinesThis story was originally reported by Kelsey Gibbs at WTVF. 1756
