As of Monday morning, Johns Hopkins reports that the U.S. had total 299,000 deaths; the country has seen more than 2,000 deaths a day in recent weeks.On Friday night, the FDA made the much-anticipated move to approve Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine candidate for Emergency Use. The move allows the U.S. to begin inoculating Americans against COVID-19, which is currently spreading and killing at rates not yet seen during the pandemic.The FDA prompted Pfizer to begin shipping the first doses of the vaccine nationwide. On Sunday, the CDC issued a recommendation for the vaccine, giving health care professionals to start distributing shots to those that want them.Pfizer's vaccine requires two doses, which need to be taken 21 days apart. Everyone who receives an initial dose on Monday will need to return next month to complete the process.Pfizer's development of a COVID-19 vaccine — which studies have shown to be 95% effective in preventing the virus — in under a year is nothing short of a medical miracle. The previous speed record for vaccine development occurred in the 1960s when researchers developed a vaccine for the mumps in just four years.However, plenty of obstacles remain for the U.S. amid the pandemic. Anywhere from about 30% to 50% of Americans have expressed skepticism in getting a COVID-19. Health care experts suspect that about 70% of Americans would need COVID-19 antibodies in order to reach herd immunity.A COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna is expected to be granted Emergency Use Authorization later this week, and health care professionals could begin distributing that vaccine as soon as next week.An earlier version of this story mistakenly stated that the two doses of Pfizer's vaccine needed to be taken 28 days apart. 2847

Feeding the country during a pandemic is no short order. In fact, it's an incredibly tall one stacked 60 feet high inside grocery warehouses across the country.Mike Violette is the CEO at Associated Grocers of New England. We first met Mike back in March, when Americans were buying food in record numbers. Workers in this warehouse could barely keep up with demand. Shelves sat as empty as suppliers couldn't keep up with the demand for everything from paper towels to flour."What we saw last March, you won’t see that again. Paper manufacturers have changed their lines, what they’re producing, and how they’re producing," Violette explained.Demand for groceries across the country is still up 20 percent over this time last year. While suppliers have kept up with demand, there are random shortages for things like glass mason jars."People are cooking, people are eating at home and they’re cooking. A lot of people learned to cook from last March forward, and they’re doing more of it," Violette added.This time around, Violette and other grocers are urging Americans to avoid panic buying as some states reimpose COVID-19 restrictions."There’s no need to stock up. There’ll be plenty of product; the food supply is strong and by people stocking up, it makes it harder for people to get products and people have to make more frequent stops to go to the store,” Violette said.There’s something else this grocery distributor has realized in recent months: even with near-record numbers of Americans unemployed, they’re having trouble filling jobs.Warehouses and factories across the country have noticed similar trends. Part of the reason is that workers are concerned about catching COVID-19 and not filling open positions. This is also not the kind of job that can be done from home."I think a lot of it is the type of work that it is. It involves heavy lifting, so it can be hard work," Violette said.But all that aside, these men and women will keep working to keep grocery store shelves stocked to keep America fed during the pandemic. 2050

The hearing focused on motions to allow body camera video to be shared, and motions the defendants filed to lift a gag order.Floyd was killed on May 25 after officers confronted him in Minneapolis. Social media video shows then-officer Derek Chauvin putting his knee on Floyd’s neck to hold him down for several minutes as Floyd says he can’t breathe.The gag order was lifted at Tuesday’s hearing. Earlier this month, the judge issued a gag order, saying the intent was to limit pretrial publicity in order to have a fair trial. Chauvin’s attorney had argued that many high-profile politicians and leaders had spoken out against Chauvin publicly."On the other hand, one would be hard pressed to locate any pretrial publicity referring extensively to Mr. Chauvin’s innocence until proven guilty or that his alleged actions were justifiable in the line of his duties as a Minneapolis Police Officer," attorney Eric Nelson wrote in the motion. 1063

For those fortunate to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, many are finding they now have more time to commit to home construction projects large and small and everything from retiling a bathroom to a large home renovation."In many communities in the home space itself, what we’ve seen is after that initial decline and slowdown where many of these businesses were struggling, a pretty pronounced uptick now in the level of business coming through," said Nate Chai of Thumbtack. They have some advice for how people can safely prepare their homes for construction during a pandemic. "We actually recommended the contractors put up the plastic sheets sectioning off the room and then they can do zippers on those. That was [our] first request and Jamie has been wiping down the door handles before they come and when they leave," said Fillip Hord, who is also Chief Organizing Officer of MakeSpace.The couple also recommends decluttering and clearing out the space you want worked on, requesting contractors wear masks, stay six feet apart and wash their hands frequently. But also be prepared for your home project to take longer than expected."Instead of having 14 different contractors and three different trades in your house at one time, you're going to have the carpenter one day. The next day maybe one electrician. The next day maybe a plumber and then the plumber has to wait for the electrician to come back," said Fillip Hord.Still, they say getting the projects done right now has its benefits."Now is the perfect time to take time to get to those projects you’ve been wanting to get to for a while in your home. There’s really no better time," said Jamie Hord."From what we saw at the start of the pandemic is people sort of hunkered down. There was quite a drop in the number of projects coming through our platform but in more recent weeks, what we’ve seen is it actually accelerating pretty fast," said Chai.In fact, at the end of March, Thumbtack says home renovation projects were down 40 to 50%.
