SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Marine Corps reported an E.coli outbreak Tuesday among more than 300 troops at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.The diarrheal illness has affected 302 of approximately 5,500 recruits at the base. The cases had tapered off in the past week but a spike was reported Monday.Ten recruits were admitted to an off-base medical facility while the remainder are being cared for at MCRD. The source of the outbreak is under investigation, according to the Marine Corps."Our immediate focus is identifying, isolating and treating recruits who present symptoms," said Brig. Gen. William Jurney, commanding general, MCRD San Diego and the Western Recruiting Region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a YouTube star who drove his McLaren the wrong way on the 805 last year, killing a mom and her daughter, are suing the City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT).The lawsuit claims the “horrific and tragic event” was entirely preventable.Eighteen-year-old Trevor Heitmann, known as McSkillet, drove his McLaren the wrong way on the freeway in August 2018, killing Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana.
