Right now, that debate includes the highest court in the land and how to replace one of its iconic members.“Well obviously, it’s a very contentious situation,” said Patrick Wohlfarth, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies the history of the Supreme Court.“When Trump nominates someone and the Republican Party in the Senate is able to confirm, to successfully confirm that nominee, it stands to assume that, that is going to shift the court to the right and perhaps significantly so,” said Wohlfarth. Three of the current justices were appointed by a Democratic president and five were appointed by a Republican. If President Donald Trump's next appointee is confirmed that number would grow to six.That kind of ideological shift could make a huge impact on a variety of issues that directly affect American lives.“Healthcare, the individual mandate should be struck down,” said Michael Wille a Washington, D.C. resident.“There’s issues around who to love, how to care for our own selves. Issues around Native American and Indigenous rights. Rights to religion and all of these issues around justice,” said Liz Theoharis with the Poor People's Campaign. “Ending our involvement in foreign wars, school choice, reforming entitlements. I want my generation to see social security and medicare,” said Willie.“From healthcare to civil rights to women’s rights, women’s reproductive rights, I mean everything is on the table,” said Mike Gee, a Washington D.C. resident.One issue that comes up a lot, is the possibility of overturning Roe v. Wade, the nearly 50-year-old Supreme Court decision that protects a woman's right to an abortion.“As a woman, the court thinking that you can pass judgement on my body is not something I agree with,” said Theoharris. “With Ruth Bader Ginsburg no longer on the court, the person that fills that seat has the potential to swing the court majority view of certain abortion restrictions in the opposite direction,”A potential swing that will play out in hearing rooms in DC but affects American lives for the foreseeable future.“It’s everything, that’s the point,” said Gee. 2161

Dane Cummings, a waste management garbage collector, was on his route Thursday morning when he was told to evacuate. But he continued on his route in order to make sure people he knew got out safely.One of those people was his friend, 93-year-old Margaret Newsum. She hadn’t evacuated yet, because she was unaware how rapidly the Camp fire was moving toward her home in Biggs, California.“The fire was wiping the town of Paradise,” Newsum says. “It was moving so fast that people were moving out and leaving everything behind.”Soon, the power was off, and phones weren’t working.  “There was nobody I could call,” she says. “Nobody was there; they were all gone.”Well, almost everyone.“I knew my fear was over with when I saw him in that truck,” Newsum says. “And I knew when he says, ‘You’re going with me’ that he meant it, and I didn’t argue with him.”Cummings strapped Newsum’s walker to the truck and carried her to his truck. Then, the pair embarked on a 5-hour drive unlike anything they’ve ever experienced.“The smoke, you thought you were stepping in to hell. It was jet black, and you could see it dropping down on the highway. He said, ‘That’s hell. We’re going to hell.’ And I said, No, we’re gonna make it.  Just keep going!”The experience has made the two closer than ever.“He’s an angel. DENVER — An Uber driver kicked a passenger out of their vehicle after a passenger who claimed to have COVID-19 took off her mask, started coughing and refused to put it back on.The Uber driver, who asked to remain anonymous, says he picked up the passenger just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday in Denver.He said the passenger got in the car with a mask on, but she started coughing and took it off once she was inside."You know in this day and age, you should probably have a mask, especially since it's the law and you're sick," the driver told the passenger, according to dash camera video.The woman told the driver that she's not sick. But later, the driver asked if she had COVID-19."Yep, sure do," the passenger said."You said you did?" the driver responded. "Is that the truth? Please, it's my life."The woman ignored the driver and said he needed to take her to her destination. The driver then lost his temper and kicked the woman out of his car."I was angry that someone would be so callous and cavalier with my life," the driver said. "At the end of the ride, when she got out, she said, you've got COVID-19."He filed a complaint with Uber and received an email stating that they would reach out to the rider and take appropriate action. But the driver said someone else ordered the ride for the woman."In this instance, I don't know that Uber could have done anything differently," he said. "She had a mask on when she got in. She was doing everything that she was supposed to."Uber policy requires drivers and passengers to wear a mask and adds that drivers can cancel trips if they don't feel comfortable.In response to a request for comment, Uber laid out the policy and procedures it has implemented in the hopes of keeping people safe, which includes denying passengers access to Uber if they repeatedly violate the mask policy."Her lack of caring for another person is costing me my livelihood as well as potentially getting sick and possibly worse," the driver said.He says he began driving for Uber more than a year ago and has picked up and dropped off hundreds of passengers. DETROIT — Kia is recalling nearly 295,000 vehicles in the U.S. because the engines can stall or catch fire. The recall comes a week after Kia and affiliated Korean automaker Hyundai were fined by the U.S. government for allegedly delaying recalls. The recall covers certain 2012 and 2013 Sorento SUVs, 2012 through 2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars, and 2011 through 2013 Optima Hybrid cars. Also included are 2014 and 2015 Soul SUVs and 2012 Sportage SUVs. Kia says in documents posted Saturday by the U.S. government that no manufacturing defect has been found, but it’s recalling the vehicles to mitigate any risk of fire. It’s also where people can now meet big fines and possible jail time for not covering their faces.“I feel like my freedoms have been taken away and that I should have a choice,” said Kindra, a woman visiting this San Diego County beach town from Gilbert, Arizona.Others seem split on the city’s recent decision to spend ,000 from its COVID-19 relief fund to have sheriff’s deputies enforce mask wearing rules.“Spending money that we don’t have to create another enforcement just feels like a blatant misuse of government funds,” said commercial real estate investor David Thomas.“You have to adopt a cooperative attitude; we’re all in it together,” said Del Mar local Andrea Walters. “Would it kill you not to wear a mask? No!”The city also spent ,000 adding signs reminding people to wear masks.“To people who feel like their rights are being tread upon, I wish they would look at this in a different frame,” said Del Mar mayor Ellie Haviland.Haviland says this extra enforcement is not a scare tactic but rather a way to be as proactive as possible to help get this pandemic under control.“It has been shown in other communities around the world that enforcement is one of the key elements of getting the compliance needed in order to get people wearing masks and social distancing,” she said.Haviland added that anyone not wearing a mask and is less than 6 feet away from someone that’s not considered a household member is violating local health codes which could result in a ,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.“I don’t think you can ever look for that to happen unless there’s something egregious,” said Del Mar-based lawyer Bing Bush, Jr. “It’s just a matter of public safety.”While Bush Jr. believes most people don’t have to worry about getting fined or going to jail for not wearing a mask, he says there is a lawful hierarchy across the county where cities are required to do at least the bare minimum when it comes to enforcing state and county health requirements.“I think where it gets kind of tough is where again you butt up against individual rights,” he said. “Folks aren’t quite used to having their so-called freedoms taken away for the public good and it’s a challenge.”It's a challenge city leaders say is based on facts and science not politics or individual beliefs.“This is strictly about what are we seeing working in other places and what are the health experts recommending that we do,” Haviland said.This added enforcement is a four-month program that runs through November.
