SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A six-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself Tuesday night, according to the San Diego Police Department.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 4300 block of 52nd St. in the Colina Del Sol neighborhood near City Heights, a few blocks north of Fay Elementary School.San Diego police say the child was playing with the gun when he shot himself in the chest.City News Service, citing information from SDPD Officer John Buttle, reported the boy was in his grandmother's room when he discovered a .22-caliber handgun underneath a mattress.Police say the bullet went through the boy's chest, and the child was conscious and breathing when officers arrived. The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with unknown injuries. His condition is unknown at this time. 827

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego nurse who cares for "the sickest of the sick" babies will be honored Sunday for her extraordinary character.Around Rady Children's Hospital, Linda Black is known for her Scottish accent and knack for writing poems."Remember my fingers remember my toes, Remember my eyes so big and so brown, Remember the wind making my whole face frown," she read from one of her poems. This one was written for a baby she cared for who did not survive.She's worked at the hospital for 12 years and always knew she was a caretaker."I wanted to be a nurse because my grandmother had multiple sclerosis and she had several strokes, I used to help my aunt look after her," she said.She is the primary caretaker for one baby at a time. Sometimes the baby is there for weeks, sometimes for months. She found the silver lining in traumatic times, writing poems for the families tailored to their little angels, "basically saying to the families thank you for giving me the honor of looking after your child and your child made an impact on my life."She hopes the poems bring back positive memories for families in a dark time. The families overwhelmed with gratitude, often hugging her. One family whose child survived used her poem as a bucket-list and would send Black photos each time they checked something off the list.When she started writing poems for those who didn't make it, she was worried about the impact. Black was reassured when she ran into a family at a party. She cared for their baby and hadn't seen them since their baby passed. "On her phone was a picture of the grave and on the grave was the poem, it made me realize how my words meant so much," she said tearfully.Sunday she'll be honored at the March of Dimes Signature Chef's Gala for her extraordinary character."If we get donuts we're really excited. You know, donuts and bagels are the biggest gift for us, sometimes chocolate, but to get an award and to get recognized by someone who's outside of my unit it's absolutely amazing, just wow!" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Solana Beach man is back in San Diego still recovering from a spinal cord injury that happened halfway around the world in Bali.Anthony Galvan-Schaible's journey happened during the pandemic and even though he's back home, there are months of intensive rehab ahead.Schaible went to Bali in February with plans to stay until April. Then the pandemic started and he had to stay.In late July, Schaible was in a motorcycle accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He required emergency surgery halfway around the world.RELATED: Local man's trip to Bali takes unexpected turn after crashHis mom flying to be by his side."Pretty much just got stronger and we had to figure out how to fly business class," Schaible said before his return.Two weeks ago, Schaible made it back home, transferred to UCSD La Jolla after three flights and 36 hours of travel with doctors on board."Definitely noticing myself get a little stronger as the days go by but next is an acute rehab facility," said Schaible.In the coming days, Schaible will move to Loma Linda University inpatient rehab. Doctors haven't ruled out the possibility of regaining movement and one day walking again — something Schaible plans to work towards one day at a time."At this point, it's just pretty positive and just looking forward to moving more and wiggling a little bit more and hopefully getting these legs going would be my goal," Schaible says.The family still posted a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A shark was seen off the San Clemente Pier Monday morning, prompting lifeguards to close a two-mile stretch of beach.Several witnesses saw the shark about 9 a.m.  It was estimated at nine feet long, lifeguards said. They did not know what type of shark it was.Few people were in the water because of cold temperatures and minimal surf, said officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A scary looking fish with dagger-like teeth was discovered Wednesday on the shores of Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. The four-foot-long fish isn't something people usually find while fishing off a local pier or even walking along the coast. And before imaginations run wild, it isn't a monster — well, not quite.The fish is a lancetfish, which typically call the dark depths of the ocean home. There, the fish feed on jellyfish, micro plastic, tiny deepwater organisms, and even smaller lancetfish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).RELATED: Rattlesnake season officially begins in Southern California(There's the monster aspect.)With sharp fangs and prehistoric spikes, the fish appears to look like an ancient creature from the time of dinosaurs.That may or may not be the case. Not a lot is known about the mysterious fish, according to NOAA, save for information on their diets and places they call home. And despite their place in the ocean's depths, fisherman may sometimes catch more lancetfish than tuna or mahi. NOAA says the fish is actually the most common bycatch in their fisheries, besides blue sharks.You may not want to try grilling up the fish either.
