COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman arrested for dumping puppies in a trash can in Coachella was sentenced to a year in jail, according to KABC. Deborah Sue Culwell, 59, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment charges. Culwell was arrested after surveillance video captured a white jeep pull up behind a store on the 49000 block of Grapefruit Boulevard as a woman exited with a plastic bag. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Every June 6 that passes marks one more year since a historic day in world history: D-Day. Coronado local Tom Rice was there. He was part of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.Seventy six years ago, Rice jumped out of a plane onto the beaches of Normandy, not knowing it would become a turning point in World War II. Since 1944, Rice works to commemorate the day. In recent years, he’s returned to France to re-enact D-Day, jumping out of a plane like he did during the war. This year, it’s different. Coronavirus has impacted his ability to travel overseas, so he has a new way to honor the day. It started with Carentan, the area in France where he usually jumps, deciding to ring a bell at 6:44 p.m. to commemorate the June of 1944 date. Then, Rice and his army of friends in San Diego decided to turn it into something larger. At 6:44 p.m. local time, Rice rung a bell at the Coronado Naval Base, and he wasn’t alone. Friends and supporters all rang bells at the same time to mark the anniversary. “Globally the bells will ring for thee. For those who died, who were captured, who suffered all the deprivations that war can bring,” said Rice. When she dies, her ring is placed in a velvet-lined memorial box alongside dozens of others to commemorate her dedication to the church.During the monastery's entire 159 years of existence, Sister Aileen Bankemper said, no one has ever dared to steal one. On Monday, someone stole more than 100. "There was a sense of just emptiness," Bankemper, the prioress, said of discovering the burglary. "There was just like, 'Why would somebody do that?' We're a generous community. It somebody had a need for money, they could have come to us, and we certainly would have listened to what their need was."The rings disappeared while the sisters were attending a memorial service for 88-year-old Sister Cecilia Dagle, who was known during her time at the monastery for her kind spirit and habit of writing birthday cards for each of her fellow sisters. When they returned, someone had stolen "a significant amount of money" and more than a century of history.Sister Nancy Kordenbrock said police believe the person who stole the rings, which were 14 karat gold, would have done so intending to pawn them for cash.
