 HARTFORD, Connecticut (WFSB) — Environmental officials said mosquitoes in 40 Connecticut towns have tested positive for West Nile virus.The most recent detection was on Wednesday in South Windsor.The highest number of mosquitoes testing positive is along the shoreline and in Fairfield County, and in the greater Hartford area.So far, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station has detected West Nile virus in the following communities: Bethany, Bridgeport, Chester, Danbury, Darien, East Haven, Easton, Fairfield, Franklin, Greenwich, Haddam, Hamden, Hartford, Madison, Manchester, Meriden, Middlefield, Milford, Monroe, New Britain, New Canaan, New Haven, Newington, North Branford, Norwalk, Orange, Shelton, South Windsor, Stamford, Stratford, Wallingford, Waterbury, Waterford, West Hartford, West Haven, Westbrook, Weston, Westport, Wethersfield, Woodbridge.Two human cases of WNV-associated illnesses have been identified this year in Connecticut.There have been 136 human cases of West Nile virus, including three fatalities, that have been diagnosed in CT residents since 2000.“This is the critical time of summer when virus activity reaches its peak in the mosquito population,” said Dr. Philip Armstrong, Medical Entomologist at the CAES.The hot and muggy weather is creating optimal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.For more on the state's testing procedures, head to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station's website here. 1463

(AP) — NFL players are publicly pleading with the league to address several health and safety concerns on the eve of training camp. The league informed teams on Saturday that training camps will open on time even though discussions with the players’ union regarding testing for the coronavirus and other health and safety protocols are ongoing. Rookies for Houston and Kansas City are set to report Monday and rookies for other teams are due on Tuesday. Players for all teams are scheduled to report by July 28. Many prominent players expressed their thoughts in a social media blitz Sunday."I am really nervous about putting myself at risk without any safety measures being set in place. I’ve had a family member (27) contract the virus and they didn’t think they were going to make it. This is serious. If we are going to play in a pandemic the [NFL] must keep us safe," tweeted Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett."I am concerned. My wife is pregnant. [NFL] Training camp is about to start. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Challenger Middle School teacher Christopher Kelly is the SDCCU classroom hero. Kelly is a fresh face in the teaching world with only four years on the job, but is already making a tremendous impact in his students' lives. Kelly uses a mix of positive reinforcement and entertainment to keep his students engaged in their eighth-grade math class and eager to learn. "I do talk like a talk show host," Christopher Kelly said. "I think it's kinda fun, and I think it keeps them more engaged that way they pay attention more." Kelly became a teacher to create a positive and secure space for kids to learn and grow. "I think that everybody in this world that has been successful has had somebody help them along the way," Kelly said. "I just want to be able to help some people who maybe haven't had that yet." Kelly's attentiveness toward his students is one of the reasons eighth-grader Olivia Toledo wanted to recognize him for his hard work. "When I need help, I know that I can go to him, and he will help me until I get it," Toledo said." He keeps us engaged by telling us to just keep going and never give up." His students and staff say Kelly is a teacher who is making a difference in his students' lives. "When you get recognized in a big way like this, it feels really good; it makes you feel really special," Kelly said.
