Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has granted executive clemency to Cyntoia Brown by commuting her life sentence.The governor's office announced the decision Monday morning. She will be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019, after serving 15 years in prison.“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”As part of her parole, she cannot violate any state or federal laws and will be subject to a release plan approved by the Tennessee Department of Correction and special supervision conditions, including employment, education, counseling and community engagement requirements.Brown's parole supervision will continue until August 7, 2029, at which point her sentence will expire.In 2006, she was convicted of first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of Antioch realtor Johnny Allen.She was sentenced to life in prison. The Army Corp of Engineers is looking at more than 300 facilities nationwide that it could turn into hospitals.New York City’s Javits Convention Center opened as a temporary hospital on Monday. Thousands of beds are now set up to receive patients who are not suffering from COVID-19.The field hospital is staffed with hospital units from Fort Campbell and Fort Hood.Wayne Brackin, the CEO of Kidz Medical Services, has experience with field hospitals and hospital hurricane responses in Florida. He says the Army can set up a field hospital in just weeks. “It will have the feeling of being in a mass unit,” said Brackin. “You'll come into a different kind of facility. They'll be higher levels of security. You're clearly in most cases going to be going into a structure that's been built and will have a lot of components that will look like a very sophisticated version of a tent.”Brackin says an advantage of an existing structure is it's typically climate controlled.The Army is sending field hospitals to Washington state and New Jersey. It says they'll be running by April 2.Navy hospital ships that arrived in New York and outside Los Angeles have started accepting non-COVID-19 patients.A field hospital also opened Tuesday in New York City’s Central Park. It's run by Christian humanitarian aid organization Samaritan's Purse. The group usually brings doctors to extreme medical situations around the world.The Central Park field hospital is designed as a respiratory care unit. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) of Tennessee filed a lawsuit against Smith County Schools on behalf of two families who say the school system regularly incorporates prayer into school events and proselytizes students.The plaintiffs are listed as Kelly Butler and Jason and Sharona Carr. “When I was in the military, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, which includes religious freedom,” said Butler, a U.S. Army veteran and father to several children who attend Smith County schools. “It’s wrong for the public schools to make my family feel like second-class citizens because of our beliefs.”Butler and his children are atheists, as are the Carrs and their children.The families' accounts span several school years and include things like school-directed prayer during mandatory assemblies, the distribution and display of Bibles during classes, Bible verses posted in hallways and shared in notes from school staff to students, prayers broadcast through loudspeakers at school sporting events, coaches leading or participating in prayer with student athletes, and a large cross painted on the wall of a school athletic facility.“At school everybody makes it seem like you have to believe in one thing, just like them. It’s very awkward and uncomfortable,” said Leyna Carr, a student at Smith County High School. “I respect other people’s religion, and I would like it if everyone else would respect my beliefs.”“When public schools promote religion, it sends an impermissible message that students who don’t share the favored religious beliefs don’t belong,” said Heather L.
