CHICAGO -- Right now, nine COVID-19 vaccines are in or near a large-scale human trial phase. But enrollment of minorities in the trials remains a challenge. This is despite a disproportionate number of African-Americans impacted by the coronavirus.Earlier this month, ads from the National Institutes of Health began airing asking Black people and Latinos to volunteer for the coronavirus vaccine trials.“Operation Warp Speed” may be moving quickly, but pharmaceutical companies are having a difficult time getting Black and brown participants.“What we really bring to the table is moral persuasion and encouraging our population to participate in safe and ethical clinical trials,” said Reverend Anthony Evans, the president of the National Black Church Initiative. Over the past 15 years, they’ve worked with the pharmaceutical industry to boost Black representation in more than a dozen previous clinical trials.“I think that we can be a major help to both the government and the pharmaceutical industry if they use us,” said Evans.The Black community has been hesitant to take part in medical research and clinical trials because of a history of past abuse.Most infamously, the 40-year Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment that used Black men to study what happened when the disease went untreated.“They were just basically experimented on without their knowing about it or their understanding what was happening. And a lot of people had very bad outcomes because of this,” said Dr. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at University of Chicago Medicine.A recent Pew study found that Black Americans are still more skeptical of experimental treatments and a potential COVID-19 vaccine than Hispanic and white adults.Add to that, most of the current trials are recruiting mainly online, something experts say often results in mostly white people enrolling.“We will know more and be able to do a better job in caring for our friends and patients of color if we have more participation in these trials,” said Landon.Moderna had to delay trials because of a lack of diversity. As of earlier this week, 13% of Moderna’s enrollment volunteers were Black and 51% white. At the same time, only 8% of Pfizers volunteers are Black and 75% white.“They are going to have a significant shortfall of data when it comes down to African Americans and other groups, especially Latinos, and simply because they have not made the efforts,” said Evans.In the end, the vaccine must be at least 50% effective to receive FDA approval. But one Chicago mom decided she would take her family globetrotting anyway without an airplane.High school English teacher Lynn Gilbertsen says remote learning got her two young children, 6-year-old Max and 3-year-old Beth, interested in far-off places.“They'd started to ask lots of lots of questions about all the countries and you know they know all the continents,” said Gilbertsen.But with COVID-19 grounding true world exploration, she opted for a different approach.“It occurred to me that we could do something where we could go places instead of being stuck in our house,” said Gilbertsen.She started with a list of landmarks and monuments that could stand in for the real thing.That included places like a golf course Eiffel Tower for France, a Hindu temple and Taj Mahal mural for India, and a public park with a statue of Athena helped them learn about Greece.“I wanted to feel like it does when you travel, where you get to really immerse yourself in wherever you are for a little while,” said Gilbertsen.All of her travel destinations are within an hour of her Chicago home.For their visit to Italy, they chose the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In actuality, it’s a half-scale replica attached to a suburban YMCA.Another favorite was an architectural scavenger hunt for pagoda-inspired structures in Chinatown.“It seems to me like such low hanging fruit. But they loved going to Chinatown,” she said. “If you ask them what their favorite country is that we visited. They're like, ‘oh China.’”Along the way, they sample international cuisine.“I think it's hitting a lot of the sort of social, emotional pieces about why we learn about the world and why we study other people and other cultures,” said Gilbertsen.And of course they take a selfie to document each trip.Lynn’s husband, Joe Troutman, an elementary visual arts teacher says absent actual travel, this is an activity that any family can do anywhere.“I think this is our eighth or ninth country and our study so far,” said Troutman. “So, it's been quite a journey in its own right.”Gilbertsen has posted their international adventures online and is getting inundated with requests to share her ideas. California health officials are warning residents not to eat oysters from British Columbia, Canada, following a norovirus outbreak.About 100 people got sick in California after they consumed the raw oysters, health officials said."As of April 27, approximately 100 individuals have reported illness after they consumed raw British Columbian oysters sold by restaurants and retailers throughout the state," the California Department of Public Health said."Laboratory testing has confirmed norovirus infection in several patients from both California and Canada. Although the number of reported new illnesses has decreased during the last week, the investigation is ongoing."Canada has reported 172 cases of gastrointestinal illness linked to consumption of raw oysters."Avoid eating raw and undercooked shellfish, including oysters, to reduce your risk of illness," said Dr. Karen Smith, a public health officer in California."If you do eat shellfish, cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of at least 145°F. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — SpaceX has launched a newer, bigger version of its Dragon cargo ship to the International Space Station. Sunday's liftoff from NASA's Kennedy Space Center marks the first time that Elon Musk's company has two capsules in orbit at the same time. This latest Dragon should reach the space station on Monday, joining the Dragon that delivered four astronauts last month. The 6,400-pound shipment includes Christmas treats and presents for the seven station residents. NASA isn't divulging any of the gifts, but roasted turkey and cranberry sauce are on the way.
