BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce called for enhanced trade and economic cooperation between China and the European Union (EU), prior to Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's upcoming visit to three EU nations. In a recent interview with the People's Daily, Ministry of Commerce International Trade Representative Gao Hucheng reviewed the current trade and economic relationship between China and the EU, pinpointing the areas where more efforts could be made on both sides to further cooperation. In an article published in Wednesday's People's Daily, Gao said that in the past 35 years since China and the EU forged diplomatic ties, the relations between the two sides went from "constructive partnership" to "comprehensive partnership" and the now "comprehensive strategic partnership."The article was published about a week before Vice Premier Li sets out to visit Spain, Germany and Britain on Jan. 4-12.Trade between China and the European Union has become one of the most active and influential bilateral relations in the world, said Gao.Leaders of China and the European Union have been exchanging official visits frequently, said he. This year alone, seven of top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, paid official visits to over a dozen EU countries.Meanwhile, some 65 high-level delegations from the EU and its member states visited China in 2010.Trade cooperation between China and the EU has been speeding up, Gao said. When China established diplomatic relations with the EU in 1975, annual trade was at 2.4 billion U.S. dollars, the volume of about two days between two sides this year. In the past 35 years, trade volume has grown over 150 times.According to China's statistics, China-EU trade amounted to 433.9 billion U.S. dollars in the first 11 months of this year, up 33.1 percent from last year, a growth rate higher than that of China-Japan and China-U.S. trade.According to statistics released by the EU, its exports to China rose 4 percent in 2009 despite the economic recession and decreased export to the rest of the world. EU's total investment in China has exceeded 70 billion U.S. dollars so far, making the EU China's third largest source of foreign investment.Communication between people on two sides has grown substantially over the years. Nowadays nearly 200,000 Chinese students are studying in the EU countries and some 150,000 EU nationals are working in China. Over a million Chinese tourists travel to the EU countries every year.Gao pointed out that as the largest developing country in the world with fast economic growth, China could forge complimentary economic ties with the EU, as they stand at different places in economic development. On future economic policies, Gao said China was commited to expanding its domestic demand, adjusting its economic structure, and continuing its open-door policy, which is indispensable to China's development. He said the country's on-going economic reform offered great potential for investment and consumption, and gave other countries, including those in the EU, excellent business opportunities.Gao encouraged politicians and entrepreneurs on both sides to take a more holistic view of China-EU economic and trade relations and cooperate more actively in many sectors of the economy.
CHENGDU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, the local safety watchdog said. The accident happened at 11 a.m. in Weiyuan County of Neijiang City.Altogether 41 miners were working underground when a pit of Batian Coal Mine was flooded. Thirteen of them escaped, said Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau. He said rescuers had begun pumping flood water from the pit early in the afternoon. "We have sent four trucks of pumping equipment from Chengdu to help the rescue work."Graphic shows twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Nov. 21, 2010.He said medical workers were standing by to provide first-aid.Lin said the Batian Coal Mine had undergone a renovation to increase its annual output to 60,000 tonnes from the designed 50,000 tonnes. "But all its operation was legal. Its business license and production permits are valid."A similar flooding trapped three workers who were prospecting for an iron mine in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Saturday night. Rescue work continued Sunday.
UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda. The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said. "This is of great significance to the maintenance of the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region."
MINSK, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Belarus have a bright prospect for cooperation as the two countries share highly economic complementarity, says the Chinese ambassador to Belarus.Ambassador Lu Guicheng said that in recent years, China-Belarus ties have expanded rapidly and have been promoted by the leaders of both countries. The ambassador also said in the interview with Xinhua that the two countries are mutually supportive of each other on global affairs and frequent interactions between senior officials of the two countries have injected strong momentum into the development of bilateral ties.Lu also stressed that China-Belarus reciprocal economic cooperation is flourishing, with the smooth development of some major cooperative projects on infrastructure construction."China and Belarus are economically complementary on resource, market, fund and equipment, and thus share a broad prospect for cooperation," Lu told Xinhua.Meanwhile, the diplomat mentioned the profound friendship between the Chinese and Belarusian peoples. After a deadly earthquake struck China's northwestern region of Yushu in April, Belarus was among the first to extend condolences and provided aid to the people affected, Lu said.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday rejected a zero-sum formula on U.S.-China relationship, saying that the two countries have much more to gain from cooperation than from conflict.Delivering a speech on the future relations between the U.S. and China at the State Department, Clinton said it does not make sense to apply zero-sum 19th-century theories of how major powers interact in the 21st century."We reject those views," she said, referring to views which depict China's growth as a "threat" or U.S. policy on China as " containment."The State Department described the speech, delivered to inaugurate an annual forum dedicated to veteran U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, as setting stage for a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao next week.Clinton said that the world is moving through uncharted territory and needs new ways of understanding the shifting dynamics of the international landscape, a landscape marked by emerging centers of influence, but also by nontraditional, even non-state actors and the unprecedented challenges and opportunities created by globalization. This is a fact that is especially applicable to the U.S.-China relationship, she said, noting that the engagement between the two countries can only be understood in the context of this new and more complicated landscape."We are in the same boat. And we will either row in the same direction or we will, unfortunately, cause turmoil and whirlpools that will impact not just our two countries, but many people far beyond either of our borders," she said. The secretary said although the United States and China are two complex nations with very different histories, with profoundly different political systems and outlooks, there is a lot about the two peoples that reminds them of each other: an energy, an entrepreneurial dynamism, a commitment to a better future for one' s children and grandchildren."We are both deeply invested in the current order, and we both have much more to gain from cooperation than from conflict," she said. "That doesn't mean we will not be competitors ... But there are ways of doing it that are more likely to benefit than not.""A peaceful and prosperous Asia-Pacific region is in the interest of both China and the United States. A thriving America is good for China and a thriving China is good for America," the secretary said."So all of this calls for careful, steady, dynamic stewardship of this critical relationship," she said."The choices both sides make in the months and years ahead and the policies we pursue will help determine whether our relationship lives up to its promise, and it is up to both of us to translate high-level pledges of summit and state visits into action, real action on real issues," Clinton said.
