SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Most San Diego voters support a sales tax for public transit improvements, according to a study commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit System and the San Diego Association of Governments. Poll results released Wednesday show more than two-thirds of voters are in favor of a dedicated half-cent sales tax measure to raise revenue for new projects, FM3 Research reported. The City of San Diego’s current sales tax is 7.75 percent. 44 percent of those surveyed said they were “definitely yes” in favor of the sales tax measure. 23 percent voted “probably yes”. 19 percent said they were “definitely no” on a tax hike increase, according to the study.The poll results are the first step in a discussion between transit officials and the public that are expected to take place through the end of 2019. We have a lot of work to do, but we are encouraged by the results.” Transit upgrades and additions could include new trolley and bus routes, and safety enhancements, MTS officials said. “We are taking the next steps to creating a shared vision of the San Diego we want to see and this includes real choices in how residents move throughout their day,” said MTS Board Chair and San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez. “We must be intentional and inclusive. Monday was the filing deadline for people to filing claims against the organization.Team 10 has been reporting on sexual abuse allegations within the Boy Scouts for years. "He'd come at me at multiple times," former scout Mike told Team 10 in 2019. Mike declined to use his last name. Mike said the Assistant Scoutmaster sexual assaulted him during an overnight trip while he was sleeping. Mike's attorney, Andrew Van Arsdale, now represents around 80 former scouts in sexual abuse cases. He said throughout San Diego County, there are roughly 300 sexual abuse cases."What we're seeing is something on a scale we've never seen in any institutional abuse setting," Van Arsdale said. "It's hard. You picture this man you're talking to as a child and this monster on the other side doing these things to them."The Boy Scouts filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year, which means the abuse cases will go through the bankruptcy court. The national organization will work to develop a reorganization plan to fund a trust for compensation. The former scouts alleging abuse will have to approve any future plan. "If they can't come up with real money, the survivors would rather see the cease to exist then because they won't allow them to get away with paying them nothing and then just going on as business as usual," Van Arsdale said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nine people were taken into custody Friday after border officials say a panga-style boat was stopped off the coast of Carlsbad.The boat was spotted at about 10:20 p.m. on Thursday by San Diego Air and Marine Branch crews. Officials say the crews used blue lights, sirens, and a spotlight to try and stop the boat, but it would not stop.Crews then used disabling rounds on the boat's engine, bringing the vessel to a stop about 12 miles west of Carlsbad.The nine people on the boat were taken into custody onshore by Border Patrol agents. 564

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 0,000 went missing from New Hope Friendship Baptist Church in 2008 and 2010, according to new Sheriff’s Department investigation report Friday.The investigation was an Internal Affairs probe into Lt. Devera Scott. Scott was also the treasurer for New Hope Friendship Baptist Church during the time the money went missing.The report claims Scott admitted to church officials she took the money. However, the church told investigators they did not want to press charges as Scott had promised the church she would it pay it all back through monthly payments, and a portion of her retirement.The church also told investigators they were in the business of forgiveness and did not want to ruin Scott’s career, according to the documents.Investigators also learned that Scott made the church a beneficiary to a 0,000 life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy.The internal investigation became public Friday, following the ruling of a San Diego judge. The decision comes after local media, including 10News, sued to keep police unions from blocking departments from releasing records related to officer misconduct.The San Diego Sheriff's Department was not part of the suit and has been releasing cases pursuant to SB1421, according to sheriff's department Lt. Karen Stubkjaer.Scott retired from the sheriff’s department on March 22, 2013, before the investigation into the missing church money was complete according to the documents. No charges were ever made against Scott.Other court filings suggest Scott might have been facing financial problems at the time.10News reached out to the church for comment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart.This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country.The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round.The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff.
