NEW YORK (AP) — A tentative deal has been reached to settle multiple lawsuits brought against the television and film company co-founded by Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by scores of women.Attorneys involved in the negotiations told a federal bankruptcy court judge during a hearing in Wilmington, Delaware, Thursday that a breakthrough in a still-unfinished mediation had put a settlement within reach.The amount of the deal wasn't revealed in court, but a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press it was worth million. The person wasn't authorized to reveal details of the discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity."We now have an economic agreement in principal that is supported by the plaintiffs, the (New York attorney general's) office, the defendants and all of the insurers that, if approved, would provide significant compensation to victims, creditors and the estate and allow the parties to avoid years of costly, time consuming and uncertain litigation on all sides," Adam Harris, a lawyer for studio co-founder Bob Weinstein, told the judge.He cautioned that there was still "a lot of work here to do.""But," he added, "I personally am very optimistic."The size of the settlement was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.More than 15 lawsuits have been filed accusing Harvey Weinstein or the company of misconduct. The settlement would cover many of them, including a class action by alleged victims that accuses the film company of operating like an organized crime group to conceal widespread sexual harassment and assaults.It would also resolve a civil suit by the New York attorney general alleging that Harvey Weinstein's media company, in enabling his mistreatment of women, violated labor laws.The New York attorney general's office declined to comment on the amount of the settlement.Any settlement would need to be approved by the courts.Harvey Weinstein also faces criminal charges in New York of rape and performing a forcible sex act. His trial is scheduled to begin in September. NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022

NEW YORK (AP) — The one-time bookselling giant Barnes & Noble is being acquired by a hedge fund for 6 million.The national chain that many blamed for the demise of independent bookstores has been ravaged by Amazon.com and other online sellers. Independent bookstores have also persisted in the face of digital publishing.The company said in October that it might put itself up for sale after it was approached by a number of potential buyers, including founder Leonard Riggio who opened Barnes & Noble stores across the country and turned it into a superstore.Barnes & Noble said Friday that it's being acquired by Elliott Management for .50 per share, an approximately 9% percent premium to the company's Thursday closing stock price. New research may be hard for some dog owners to accept; the study found that dogs do not understand every word a human says to them.The researchers say dogs cannot hear subtle differences between words the way humans can. For example, the difference between “dog” and “dig” sounds different to human ears, but not so different to dog ears.The researchers came to their conclusion after measuring brain activity of family dogs by taping electrodes to the animals’ heads. They then played recordings of instruction words they knew, like “sit,” then similar-sounding nonsense words, like “sut,” and finally an unrelated nonsense word or sound, like “bep.”The dogs in the study, who were not trained ahead of the study, could quickly tell the difference between the instruction words and the unrelated nonsense words."The brain activity is different when they listen to the instructions, which they know, and to the very different nonsense words, which means that dogs recognize these words," lead study author and postdoctoral researcher at E?tv?s Loránd University in Budapest, Lilla Magyari told CNN.So, the good news is, yes, dogs are listening to human words and understanding some.However, brain activity showed a similar reaction in the dogs between the instruction word and the similar nonsense word.Dogs are renowned for their auditory capacity and ability to hear words and sounds, however the results show they may not be able to distinguish between subtle speech sound differences.Magyari says more research is needed to understand why this is."They may just not realize that all details, the speech sounds, are really important in human speech.
