SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer condemned Governor Gavin Newsom’s amendment to the California sex offender law in a tweet Saturday morning.The mayor said he is “appalled” by the changes, which give judges discretion on whether or not to list someone as a sex offender for having oral or anal sex with a minor, the Associated Press reported.“As a parent I’m appalled that last night our governor signed a law maintaining a 24-year-old can have sex with a 14-year-old and it not be considered predatory,” Faulconer said.RELATED: California governor signs bill changing sex offender law“An adult who commits ANY sex act on a minor 10 years younger must be registered a sex offender. Law must be changed,” he continued.The bill does not allow statutory rape or pedophilia.The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that the bill, SB145, was signed by Newsom without comment. The bill gives judges discretion over sex-offender registration in cases involving teenagers between the ages of 14 to 17, and adults who are less than 10 years older, the Chronicle said.The author of the bill Senator Scott Wiener, from San Fransisco replied to Faulconer's tweet, "Mr. Mayor - I'd always been under the impression that you were a supporter of the LGBTQ community. This bill does nothing more than treat LGBTQ young people the same way we've treated straight young people since 1944. The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually.With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s almost time to welcome back the nail-biting excitement of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.This year’s countywide bee will be held on March 15 at the McMillin Companies Event Center at Liberty Station.Roughly 100 spellers are expected to take the stage, making competition fierce.Last year was an exciting year for the competition as it saw its youngest speller ever, Edith Fuller of Oklahoma, who was only 5-years-old when she qualified.Fuller went all the way to the national stage. The spelling bee has been around for more than nine decades.The bee was founded in 1925 and has been held every year since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945.In 2017, the competition celebrated its 90th National Spelling Bee.2017’s winning word was marocain, which is “a ribbed crepe fabric used in women's clothing.”The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin May 29 and end on May 31.  943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kristi's a full-time 5th grade teacher and her sister, Heather, is the director of compliance and relations at San Diego State, Heather also runs a small tattoo removal business on the side.When COVID came around, the sisters added even more to their plate."We're both born entrepreneurs and always are thinking about solutions," says Heather.While Heather was creating a COVID training guide for her employees as her small business prepared to reopen, the sisters stumbled upon an idea that could help small business owners navigate some of their own challenges."We started brainstorming and began to go through pieces, did the research and provided a training for her employees and thought,'oh my gosh, if she needs this everyone's going to need this,'" Kristi recalled. Their safety course takes in-depth COVID-19 information, along with CDC guidelines and regulations, and transforms it all into a 30-minute safety course for employees. "In the state of COVID, there was a lot of fear and anxiety around going back to work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mission Beach residents and tourists could be getting some relief from dockless scooters speeding down the boardwalk as San Diego's summer season approaches.The Mayor's Office is working on an emergency ordinance banning electric scooters, like those used from services such as LimeBike or Bird, from the Mission Beach Boardwalk, from Crystal Pier south to the jetty."Residents have complained about [the] continued reckless use of motorized (electric) scooters along the Mission Beach Boardwalk.
