SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Though some of Balboa Park and its museums have partially reopened, the San Diego Natural History Museum will remain closed until 2021."The Nat" is keeping its doors closed for the rest of the year, despite whether public health orders allow the museum to reopen with coronavirus-related restrictions. Officials said the decision to keep the museum closed "was not an easy or obvious decision."During the five-month closure, museum staff said they will focus on exhibition space projects and programs, including:A new "California Blooming" exhibit upon reopeningConstructing an ADA-compliant ramp on the museum's east entranceDeveloping a new museum cafe and retail storeConverting a row of staff offices on the fourth floor into a gallery for future exhibitsCompleting a master plan for gardens outside the buildingThe museum is also reimagining its Canyoneers program to virtual hikes and recommendations and developing more digital options for the community, and students and teachers."The museum we closed in March will not be the same museum we reopen," said Judy Gradwohl, president and CEO of The Nat."Our future will combine the best of our work before and during the pandemic in a hybrid model that connects people with the wonder of nature on-site, online, and out in nature."In the meantime, staff say they plan to stay engaged with the community.“I look forward to seeing how our creative and energetic staff will make the most of the next five months,” said Gradwohl. “To borrow an analogy from the monarch butterflies I’ve been rearing this summer, I look at this extended closure and our eventual reopening as emerging from a chrysalis, not a hibernation.”The museum has been able to keep about 100 of its full-time and part-time staff and doesn't expect any changes to those positions. They are currently working remotely, on-site, or in the field around the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego District Attorney's Office announced a new program Thursday that would send low-level offenders to the classroom instead of a jail cell.The Community Justice Initiative requires 12 hours of cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as four hours of community service. The participant then has their case dropped and their record sealed. They wouldn't have to report an arrest on any future job application."Some people deserve second chances," DA Summer Stephan said.The program started in the South Bay in April 2018, expanded to the East County in January 2019, then North County in May. It's funded in part by the county, grants, and 0 from each criminal."That amount is less than any fine they would have gotten on any case," Stephan said.So far the program has seen 586 participants. 296 of them completed the program.Director of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adult Justice Programs and Social Worker Laura Soto spoke of one of her patients who completed the program, "she [Amanda] began to spend more time with her son, she got a diploma and she got an office job, and then she started cosmetology school."Amanda was arrested for stealing. Through the program she shifted her mindset away from entitlement."Amanda began to think about the consequences, and things to be grateful for and that made her happy," Soto said."The most common offenses in the program are in fact shoplifting, non DUI traffic violations or vandalism,." Stephan said only non-violent and non-sexual offenders qualify."Misdemeanor convictions can have damaging affects that last a lifetime," she added. Stephan said criminals will continue turning to a life of crime if they can't find a way out.10News asked Stephan what she would say to critics who believe this program could incentivize criminal behavior. She said, "the people who complete the program recidivate at 2% which is so phenomenally low."She compared it to the 16 percent who didn't complete the program and were arrested for a crime again. 2027

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego History Center is commemorating a landmark moment in the gay rights movement: the Stonewall uprising in New York. Fifty years ago, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village sparked a violent confrontation between law enforcement and gay rights activists. Although the riots happened on the other side of the country, the West Coast had a role in fighting for change. “If nothing else, it is a marker in historical time with a clearly defined before and after,” said Dr. Lillian Faderman. Faderman said Stonewall was “not the first time that gay people fought back.” She curated an exhibit called LGBTQ San Diego: Stories and Struggles, tracing the local groups that advocated for LGBTQ rights. The Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis both advocated for gay rights in the 1950s and 60s. Faderman’s exhibit highlights their work, and that of individuals who called for change. The exhibit will be open at the San Diego History Center until next year. 1022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego County jury trials are on-hold because of the pandemic. Local court officials have requested another extension from the Judicial Council of California for jury trials to be postponed through mid-September.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about the challenges of returning to jury trials. “We’re at 25-hundred jury trials that need to be tried,” she told us.Trials were halted on March 17th. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process. “What we can't do right now is bring a jury into the courthouse. When you can't even go to a restaurant to eat, the idea of bringing hundreds of people in to sit in a room together is not recommended,” she told ABC10 News.Courtrooms are being retrofitted with plexiglass barriers to protect everyone from jurors to defendants to court staff. Judge Alksne said other safety measures like social distancing will also be implemented, when appropriate.“Once you do resume the process of summoning jurors, what if they just don't feel comfortable? They fear the risk?” we asked. “Jury service is a duty that we hold in high regard. We can't have criminal justice service work without jurors so I would hope that by the time we actually pull jurors in and ask them to come down that unless they have a health condition that would make it unsafe here, that they would be willing to serve,” she responded.The court is still working through other complex issues like the possible need for more alternate jurors. “In other jurisdictions where they have tried to start jury trials up and down the State of California, one juror getting COVID-19 or having symptoms will send everyone home and you'll have a mistrial,” she added.Judge Alksne also said there are currently about 300 violent felony defendants in custody who are waiting to be tried. 1903

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego International Auto Show announced Wednesday that its 2020 lineup was cancelled.The show was set to take place from December 31 through January 3.“After careful and extensive consideration of the health risks and other factors resulting from COVID-19, the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County will be unable to hold and unfortunately must cancel the San Diego International Auto Show,” the New Car Dealers Association of San Diego County said.The next event is scheduled to take place from December 30, 2021 through January 2, 2022.“As much as we wanted to move forward with the show for all of those who eagerly anticipate it each year, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the pandemic has resulted in a situation where we are unable to hold the show. Of course, the health and safety of all of the workers, exhibitors and attendees who make the auto show such a special event are of vital importance,” said Dean Mansfield, president of the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County, which owns and produces the San Diego International Auto Show. “And given the incredible amount of planning exhibitors must do long in advance of an event of this size and the expenses incurred by all parties, we have endeavored to provide notice of cancellation as soon as reasonably possible,” continued Mansfield. 1346
