MATYBULAK RANGE, Kazakhstan, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Ma Xiaotian, chief commander of the 1,000 Chinese troops taking part in the "Peace Mission 2010" in south Kazakhstan said Thursday that the ongoing military exercise of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is purely a strategic action against terrorism.MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO REGIONAL, WORLD PEACE"Peace Mission 2010" involves 5,000 troops from five of the six SCO member states -- China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan -- from Sept. 9 to 25. TOKYO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Officials from the Chinese Embassy in Japan have visited the Chinese fishermen illegally detained by the Japanese authorities last week in the East China Sea.The Chinese government and people care very much about their living and security conditions in captivity, officials from the embassy in Tokyo and the consulate general in Fukuoka told the crew members.Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other senior diplomats have for several times lodged solemn representations with the Japanese side and protested the detention of the Chinese fishermen, they said.Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo summoned Japanese ambassador Uichiro Niwa early Sunday morning and demanded the immediate release of the Chinese fishermen and their boat. Dai urged Japan to avoid any misjudgment of the situation and to make a "wise political resolution."Dai was the highest-ranking Chinese official to make a public response after the fishing boat and its crew were seized.The Chinese embassy officials learned in detail the crew members' physical and mental conditions, bought food, fresh water and medicines for them, and contacted their families.The officials told the crew members that the Chinese government was sparing no effort in urging the Japanese side to release them, and asked them to keep good health and calmness, support the Chinese government's work and have confidence that the government can properly handle the issue as quickly as possible.The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo is continuing to make representations with the Japanese authorities, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the crew members and their boat.

VIENNA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The six-party talks is the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) directors meeting here Tuesday.From the long term perspective, the fundamental way of settling regional contradictions and disputes is through continuing to advance the six-party talks, achieving the conversion of the mechanism of armistice to peace, and finally establishing a security system of peace in Northeast Asia, said Hu Xiaodi, China' s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.To this end, China hopes that no matter how situation changes, parties concerned should fix their attention on the overall situation, exercise restraint, resume direct dialogues and talks at an early date, Hu said, adding all sides should make joint efforts to achieve an early resumption of the six-party talks, and continue to advance the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.Hu noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia is still sensitive and complex, with the six-party talks stalled.The current situation once again shows that severe lack of mutual trust among parties concerned is the root cause of both frequent tensions in northeast Asia and difficulties for the six- party talks. The issue of population is always a major issue for China's social and economic development," said Li at a seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the Family Planning Association of China in Beijing.The government must solve the issue in a way that takes into consideration the whole picture of China's long-term social and economic development, he said.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.The Chinese government adopted a family planning policy in the late 1970s which basically permits most urban households to have only one child.The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.Li said the government would make efforts to improve the quality of the population, optimize the population structure and spur the rational distribution of the people, so as to turn the pressure of the population into an advantage of human resources.He also said the government would launch measures to narrow the widening ratio of men to women and address problems arising with an aging population.The population aged at or above 60-years-old will top 200 million by the end of 2015, government reports showed.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 181 basis points, or 0.27 percent, Friday to a new record high at 6.6830 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Friday's central parity rate beat the previous record of 6.6936 on Sept. 29.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Friday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 2.12 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 9.2951 Friday, higher from 9.1329 on Sept. 30, the last trading day.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 8.1040 Friday, compared with 7.9999 on Sept. 30.The Chinese currency fell 61 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.6079 from 10.6018 on the previous trading day.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.
