County spokesman Michael Workman said if the region does fall into the purple tier, the new restrictions would take effect 12:01 a.m. Saturday. This time, however, they would not be accompanied by an additional round of federal stimulus money to help small businesses make it through. "It's sustainable for a few months at time, but if you start talking about 12 to 18 months of this you're going to see hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and bars go out of business," said Steve Billings, owner of North Park's Original 40 Brewing Company. Ben Clevenger, President of the San Diego County chapter of the California Restaurant Association, says they are writing a letter asking local and state officials for a one-week extension in hopes the COVID-19 metrics improve.As for their members, he says it's up for each restaurant owner to decide what to do."We keep advising them to do safe social distancing, safe operation practices," Clevenger said. "But at the end of the day, it's up to them, the individual businesses, whether to they're going to stay open or close and follow the guidelines. I think right now, there's a lot of restaurants in survival mode, and they don't have a choice but to stay open and hope for the best."The purple tier also requires a case rate of 7.0 or more and testing positivity of 8% or more. The county's testing positivity has largely sat at 3% to 3.5% for the last four weeks, which falls within the positivity metric for the orange tier of reopening.If the county falls into the purple tier, it will have to meet red tier criteria for two consecutive weeks before it can move forward, according to the state. 3008

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a threat phoned in Thursday to a Spring Valley elementary school. A male, possibly underage, called Bancroft Elementary on Tyler Street about 2:45 p.m. to say there would be a shooting at the school, deputies said. The caller also said the school should go on lockdown. School officials initiated the lockdown and alerted the Sheriff’s Department, which sent deputies to the scene. California Highway Patrol officers also responded to the school. No other threats were made, and no other information substantiated the caller’s threat. Bancroft Elementary released students without incident under the watch of law enforcement officers, Sheriff’s Sergeant Michael Hettinger reported. 767

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The world's only two platypuses to live outside of Australia now call the San Diego Zoo Safari Park home.The zoo recently received the two platypuses — a male named Birrarung that hatched in 2011 and female named Eve that hatched in 2004 — from Taronga Zoo Sydney. In San Diego, the zoo says they will be ambassadors for the species outside of their native Australia and advocate the "importance of freshwater for both humans and wildlife."Australian conservationists have been working to determine the status of the animal in the wild using environmental DNA, or trace DNA found in their habitats.“Overall, platypuses were detected at 38 percent of sites sampled in Victoria and 32 percent of those in New South Wales,” said Josh Griffiths, a senior wildlife ecologist. “Although it is still too early to draw many conclusions from this raw data, some trends are emerging. But now there’s another layer making body art a deep, personal connection with a loved one, using their DNA in the ink of your tattoo.It's a distinct idea on an art form thousands of years old."Probably 90 percent of the people who are on this journey with us now start off saying, 'This is a gimmick,'" says Everence Co-Founder Patrick Duffy.That includes Duffy’s Co-Founder, former Navy SEAL Boyd Renner.“I had never had a tattoo," adds Renner. “I did 28 years in the Navy, never wanted one.”But it's no gimmick. Imagine, the ability to take a loved one with you everywhere you go, in a tattoo.“I had the idea, wouldn’t it be cool to somehow turn that tattoo into some kind of vessel or reliquary,” says Duffy. “Perhaps even a piece of the person for memorializing.”That’s the moment Duffy convinced his old Navy SEAL buddy to join him on this business venture.“One thing I learned from 28 years in the Navy is every military guy I ever met carried something with them,” says Renner thinking back to his SEAL deployments.For those entering combat zones, knowing there’s a chance they may never return, a picture, a keepsake, and for many some form of tattoo honoring or memorializing a loved one that inspires them is what they take into combat with them.What they came up with was Everence. DNA from a loved one, taken with a simple cheek swab, sent to their labs in Virginia, purified and encapsulated in a medical grade material, then broken down into powder form to be mixed with tattoo ink.“The concept is based on a very, very simple premise that people are free to be their best when they feel a sense of connection to what inspires them,” adds Duffy.For San Diego tattoo artist Laura Crow, whose clientele is heavily based in the military or law enforcement, the idea was intriguing.“I was interested, yet skeptical,” says Crow.Skeptical at first, like many. After all, it’s the DNA from another human being or source. So how does it work?“It goes into the body the same as tattoo ink, and it is designed to be recognized by the body the exact same way as a non-hazardous foreign body,” explains Duffy.Tattoo artist Crow says the technology does align with some of her clientele. “A lot of my clients go and deploy for six months, four months, into war zones,” says Crow. “And I could definitely see some of them want to have their tattoos have the DNA of their children, their wives, to take a little bit of home.”The co-founders are clients too. Duffy has the DNA of his daughter in his tattoo depicting a story they love. And Renner, the Navy SEAL who never wanted a tattoo, now has the DNA of his wife  - inspired by her resilience battling Cystic Fibrosis. They were together the day he got his.“She was able to take the Everence, her encapsulated DNA, and add it to the red ink that they added to the red rose on the tattoo,” says Renner proudly displaying the art on his left calf. 3071
