Authorities say a Florida deputy fatally shot an armed man several hours after a stolen pickup truck he was riding in ran over a police detective in another county. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says 31-year-old Aaron Phillips was killed Wednesday while fighting with a deputy at a mobile home park near Mulberry. A woman who had been with Phillips, 36-year-old April Thompson, was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds. In neighboring Hillsborough County on Wednesday morning, a Plant City detective was run over while trying to approach Phillips and Thompson's truck. At least 300 people have been evacuated in Kearney, Nebraska due to severe flooding, according to the city's emergency management coordinator Darrin Lewis.Those evacuated include both residents and hotel guests, Lewis said."We have not started assessing the number of structures that have been impacted by the flood waters but for the community, it's devastating," Lewis said.Lewis told CNN that although the floodwater is beginning to recede in the city, Wood River is expected to crest at a historic 17.7 feet Wednesday morning, which could cause more flooding and require additional water rescues.Multiple water rescue operations took place as many locations near I-80, which sits along the Platte River, were cut off by high water, David Pearson, Senior Service Hydrologist at NWS Omaha, told CNN Tuesday.The city, which has a population of more than 30,000, received close to 9 inches of rain Monday night causing widespread flooding throughout the region, Pearson said. Beavers have been gnawing away at one of the towns parks in South Windsor, Connecticut.The animals have left the people divided. Some of them are very upset after learning the animals were trapped and possibly killed.As much as people didn’t want these beavers to be hurt, town officials say the beavers were causing too much damage to the park. Beavers are known to chew up trees and build dams on the water, which was happening at South Windsor’s Nevers Road Park.“They’ve been cutting down a lot of trees and I can understand because they’re very destructive,” said Yvette Smith of South Windsor.Homeowners by the water worried about potential flooding along Lake Avenue.Trees were ruined and on the brink of falling over on the trail that’s closed for repairs.But the animals also grew a fair share of supporters.“We need to learn how to coexist. We have wonderful wildlife we have to consider and if there were better options I at least would’ve liked them at least explored,” said Carrie Morse of South Windsor.“(My daughter) was texting me while I was at the meeting. ‘Mom, please do what you can to save those beavers,’ so it was a rough discussion this morning before she went to school when she found out they were no longer there,” said Carrie Morse.On Tuesday afternoon, the town manager says if the beavers were trapped and killed, it ultimately happened through the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection agency.“No matter what we do we’re in trouble. While blue light exposure has been known to cause strain in eyes, Oregon State University researchers studied the effect of blue light exposure on aging. Based on to their findings, exposure to blue light could cause aging to accelerate. For their study, researchers used common fruit flies and exposed them to 12 hours of blue LED light and 12 hours of darkness. To compare, researchers kept a group of flies in total darkness, as well as a group of flies that were exposed to light that had the blue wavelengths filtered out. The researchers said they chose fruit flies because their cellular and developmental mechanisms are similar to humans.The researchers said that flies exposed to blue LED light sustained damage to their retinal cells and brain neurons and had impaired locomotion. Even more stunning, some of the flies, which exhibited some brain damage, were mutants that did not develop eyes."The fact that the light was accelerating aging in the flies was very surprising to us at first,” said Jaga Giebultowicz, a professor of integrative biology at Oregon State. “We’d measured expression of some genes in old flies, and found that stress-response, protective genes were expressed if flies were kept in light. "We hypothesized that light was regulating those genes. Then we started asking, 'what is it in the light that is harmful to them,' and we looked at the spectrum of light. It was very clear cut that although light without blue slightly shortened their lifespan, just blue light alone shortened their lifespan very dramatically.” 1708
