INDIANAPOLIS — If you receive an email offering to help check your gift card balances, do not click on it, the Better Business Bureau says. Scammers are using websites to get your card number, pin number and drain your account. The BBB says you may also stumble upon one of the websites by searching online. They've offered the following tips to avoid gift card balance scams:Go to the retailer's website: If you need to check a gift card balance, go to the site listed on the back of the card itself. If there is none, go to the website of the company and look for a link to the gift card page.Use gift cards right away: A good way to avoid scams and other issues is to simply use gift cards soon after you receive them.Examine the gift card before buying: Before purchasing a gift card, be sure to give it a thorough look to make sure the PIN isn't exposed or the packaging hasn't been tampered with.Register your gift card with the retailer: If the retailer allows the option to register your gift card, take full advantage. Registering your gift card makes it easier to keep track of any misuse occurring, that way you can report it sooner and potentially end up saving the money that is stored. 1213

J.D. Salinger thought of including his generation’s idea of a trigger alert as he worked on “The Catcher in the Rye.”In an early draft of the 1951 novel, narrator Holden Caulfield warns that the story will include “quite a bit of swearing and sex stuff.” But Salinger himself drew a large “X’ over the passage and wrote “delete” in the margins.”The manuscript is part of a Salinger exhibit which opens Friday and continues through Jan. 19 at the New York Public Library’s historic 5th Avenue branch in Manhattan. The display also includes family photographs, letters and other rarities from the famously private author, who died in 2010.The exhibit, titled “JD Salinger,” draws from archives made available by Salinger’s family and helps mark the centennial of his birth. 782

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had two cancerous nodules removed from her left lung Friday at a New York hospital, the Supreme Court announced. There is no evidence of any remaining disease, says a court spokesperson, nor is there evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. The 85-year-old justice was hospitalized last month after a fall in her office, in which she fractured three ribs.In 1999, Ginsburg underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, and 10 years later she was treated for early stages of pancreatic cancer. The senior-most liberal justice, Ginsburg has said that she'll continue to serve on the Supreme Court as long as she's able to do the job."I said I will do this job as long as I can do it full steam," Ginsburg said Sunday during an interview following a New York City screening of "On the Basis of Sex," a feature film about her years as a young lawyer.Read the full statement from the court:Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent a pulmonary lobectomy today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Two nodules in the lower lobe of her left lung were discovered incidentally during tests performed at George Washington University Hospital to diagnose and treat rib fractures sustained in a fall on November 7. According to the thoracic surgeon, Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, both nodules removed during surgery were found to be malignant on initial pathology evaluation. Post-surgery, there was no evidence of any remaining disease. Scans performed before surgery indicated no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. Currently, no further treatment is planned. Justice Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days. Updates will be provided as they become available. This story is breaking and will be updated. 1799
