VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A SWAT team with the San Diego Sheriff's Department arrested a former high school speech therapist on Friday morning.Arturo Avina, 33, was taken into custody on the 1000 block of Shadoridge Drive in Vista.He had been working as a speech therapist at Rancho Buena Vista High School from August of 2017 until January of 2019, according to Lisa Contreras, a spokesperson for Vista Unified School District.In February, investigators allege, he began sending menacing messages to former colleagues. The sheriff’s department called him a “disgruntled employee” but did not describe the nature of the threats.Contreras said the threats were only made against staff, adding “at no time were there any students who were in danger.”Avina was booked on charges of criminal threats as well as burglary and vandalism.He is being held at the Vista Detention Facility on 0,000 bail. VISTA (CNS) - An intoxicated driver who struck a homeless man in Oceanside and continued driving for more than a mile, even though the victim's body had gone through her windshield and ended up on the front seat, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison.Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 31, was convicted in April of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run in the death of 69- year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen.At one point, the sentencing hearing was interrupted because the defendant was sobbing uncontrollably, said Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce.RELATED: Woman accused of hitting pedestrian, driving with his body in windshield found guiltyThe prosecutor told jurors that Sanchez displayed a conscious disregard for human life when she drove drunk and ran over Tenhulzen on a sidewalk on Mission Road near the state Route 76 bridge the morning of June 27, 2016.The victim went through the windshield and into the passenger seat of her car. Part of one of his legs -- which was severed in the accident -- was found at the back of the car near the rear window.Tenhulzen was hit so hard that he was ripped out of his pants and shoes, authorities said.After a night of drinking, Sanchez left a hotel room the next morning and was told by a male friend that she was too drunk to drive, Bruce told the jury.Defense attorney Herb Weston argued that Sanchez was tired and fell asleep behind the wheel and rode up on the sidewalk, striking Tenhulzen. He said Sanchez "freaked out" when she saw the victim's body in her car and kept driving, finally stopping a block from her home.Sanchez, who lived in Oceanside, still had shards of glass in her hair when she was taken into custody. Her blood-alcohol content was measured at between .18 and .19 percent -- more than twice the legal limit of .08 percent -- two hours after the collision, Bruce said. 1891

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House is expected to vote this week on a bill that would bring sweeping reform to the nation's drug policy, by removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act.Democratic leadership in the House is preparing for the vote on the bill, called the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act of 2019. The US House Judiciary Committee approved the measure last November.If made into law, the measure would open up business opportunities for legal marijuana nationwide.Still, many steps need to be taken to put the bill into law. If the measure passes the House, it could stall in the Republican-controlled Senate. Utah has worked on its medical marijuana program in the state since voters approved a proposition in 2018. VISTA (CNS) - A Catholic priest who grabbed a seminary student's groin from behind in a restroom stall during a night of drinking at a Carlsbad restaurant was convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery Monday.A jury deliberated about two hours before finding the Rev. Juan Garcia Castillo guilty.Castillo, who had worked at St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad since 2011, faces six months in jail and registration as a sex offender when he is sentenced Jan. 18, said Deputy District Attorney Joshua Brisbane.The 33-year-old victim -- a former Navy attorney who left the military to join the priesthood -- testified that he had met Castillo the night before the incident, which happened about 1 a.m. on Feb. 4.According to court testimony, the victim went to the restroom to be sick, and was in a stall when Castillo grabbed his genitals from behind.The victim testified that he told Castillo to go away, but the defendant came back in the stall and massaged the victim's groin in a sexual way.Castillo, 35, testified that he followed the victim into the restroom because it looked like he was going to be sick. The priest said he tried to put pressure on the victim's stomach to stop his vomiting because his mother had taught him that trick as a child.The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego suspended Castillo once it learned of the "credible allegation" against him. 1371
