"We're making arrangements and trying to recruit new volunteers to take those puppies until volunteer programs inside prisons can pick back up again," said Victoria Cavaliere with TLC. TLC's 8-week-old puppies started out in prisons where inmates train them before they went to helping those in need. "We teach incarcerated individuals who are in the program how to train dogs to become service dogs using only positive reinforcement."But since COVID-19, they had to switch gears. "We’re looking for someone who is just passionate about the mission and has the time to open up their homes to having a puppy in their home," allowing those like Swenningsen to take their place as trainers."I feel obligated to do my best and make sure Fiji gets the best he can to make it through the program and help a fellow veteran out."Veterans and those who have disabilities or other medical conditions relied on service animals, putting TLC's dogs in demand, even amid a pandemic."To take a dog from a little puppy and mold it into what you want it to be which is this amazing superhero for someone with a disability and help give them independence and get them out of their homes and be part of the world."TLC partnered with Guide Dogs of America and has been in service for 20 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

A highly specialized group of employees at public utility plants who have jobs that are impossible to do at home are some of these workers. Some workers at the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant are going above and beyond to make sure our drinking water is safe from the coronavirus. When we think of heroes during this coronavirus pandemic, we immediately think of medical staff, grocery workers, and delivery people. But remember to thank those who continue to provide water. "The plant cannot run without these operators," Jessica Jones, communications director at the desalination plant said. They have been living at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant since last Thursday. For 21 days, they will be on 12-hour shifts and sleeping in their RV's parked inside the facility."Being completely locked down is the only way we can ensure that these operators remain healthy," Jones said.Having no human contact with the outside world, these quarantined employees will get food delivered to them at the gate. "All treatment plants have multiple processes that will either kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants in the water," Jim Fisher, director of operations and maintenance at the San Diego County Water Authority, said. So experts say there is no need for buying water bottles in bulk. "You can have confidence that the water is safe," Fisher said. "The water is continually being treated, and it's monitored 24 hours a day. The COVID-19 is not anything unusual from a water treatment perspective."The plant will soon start a campaign for local students to write letters to the quarantined workers at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant.
