SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick.The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido.The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As restaurants learn to adapt and overcome in the era of new closures and regulations, not all are able to make it over the hurdle. Multiple San Diego staples have announced permanent closures, including The Balboa in Bankers Hill and Cafe on Park near Hillcrest.Andy Haenfler said he opened Cafe on Park 25 years ago and has devoted his life to this business.“I opened Thanksgiving weekend in 1995 to a line down the block and thought 'oh my goodness what have I done,'” said Haenfler.He said this past March, they closed their doors, thinking it was temporary, but they were never able to open them again.“We had just gotten a shipment of ,000 worth of product in so we gave it to the staff, the staff took it home and gave it away to their neighbors,” he said.Haenfler said he had hoped to stay open a few more years then retire and sell his restaurant to employees, but that goal is no longer possible. His message to the community now is to support local businesses so this doesn’t happen again.“It’s us little one-owner, one-shop places that the community really need to support,” he said.Nearby restaurant The Balboa has a similar fate. Owner Tom Logsdon said the business started years ago with him cooking at home then it grew into what it is known for now: a community spot with good burgers. “The type of business we had is really built around dining in, it’s built around community coming together,” said Logsdon.He said he did try to reopen, but the takeout burgers weren’t able to save the business the way regular customers who sit and have multiple drinks would.“Without people hanging out and having some drinks, it just wasn’t working,” he said.Logsdon said he’s permanently closing his Bankers Hill location but has a second location in Chula Vista, so he’ll be consolidating the business and focusing his effort on the one spot.“I’ve spent about a third of my life in that building. I’ve got a big attachment to the neighborhood and the community there but after three months of just losing money like crazy, the reality was we just couldn’t keep that going,” said Logsdon.Both Logsdon and Haenfler said this is the necessary decision right now, but once the industry recovers, they hope to reopen more restaurants and continue with their careers. 2304

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric says it may cut power to some 1 million people this weekend in central and Northern California, which could see the most dangerous fire weather of the season. PG&E says it could begin safety shutoffs Sunday morning as gusts and low humidity ramp up the risk of downing power lines and sparking massive fires in tinder-dry brush. The shutoffs in 38 counties could last into Tuesday. PG&E equipment has been blamed for sparking some of the most devastating fires in recent years, including a 2018 blaze in Butte County that killed 85 people. SAN DIEGO, CA — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego calls it the "Get It Done" App, but a Normal Heights man says he wants to know when work will get done."They block the sidewalk. They've ripped through my canopy. They've killed my two lemon trees," said Mike Scaglione as he stood in front of his home. He's referring to the damage caused by palm fronds that fall from two trees on city property he says are in serious need of maintenance. "It'll be seven years tomorrow that I've lived here and in that time frame I've probably picked up 3 or 4 hundred palm fronds."Scaglione said he's been trying for several months to get the city to keep up with the trimming of the two palms outside his home. "They say they're going to, or they direct me to somebody, but it just keeps going no where until it's a dead end." Scaglione says aside from the damaged to his property, he fears a potential for much worse. "Its kind of hard to see," he says, grabbing a palm frond from a pile collected near the trees, "but if you run your hand along here there's a pretty jagged toothed edge on here that if it was to land on somebody it could rip them pretty nicely."Scaglione has been using the city's Get It Done app. Past reports show crews have responded to clean up the fronds once they're on the ground. But when it came to a neighborhood tree trim last October he says, "They came through here and trimmed every tree on the block except mine." Scaglione said he asked the crews why. "They didn't have anything that could get up that high." Scaglione estimates the trees at 40 to 50 feet.In response to an inquiry by 10News, a city spokesperson sent an email explaining San Diego is on a two-year cycle for trimming city owned palm trees. Scaglione's block was on the schedule for October. But there's still more work to be done. So, does that mean the trees in front of Scaglione's home will be trimmed? "Yes," replied the spokesperson, "It is on the schedule." Though Mike feels like he's been here before."They would look into it when they were doing similar work in the neighborhood.
