SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A recent bout with the flu nearly turned deadly for a San Carlos man when it took an unexpected turn.Five weeks ago, the usually healthy 58-year-old Dave Truby came down with the flu."Fever, nausea, inability to sleep ... body soreness," said Dave's brother, Mike.Mike his brother says Dave tried to fight through it. Some five days later, Dave went to an ER, but left because of the wait for beds. That same night at home, his brother found him in bad shape."Literally shaking in a fetal position," said Mike Truby.At the hospital, Mike received some devastating news. His brother's kidneys were failing, and the MRI showed brain damage from a massive stroke. "The brain wasn't getting clean blood. It was shutting down. The whole body was shutting down. They said it didn't look good," said Mike.Loved ones and friends braced for the worst."I said my prayers and breathed deep," he said.Those prayers were answered in gradual fashion. His kidneys started working and Dave started responding."The last two weeks, he moved his head, blinked, and mouthed words. Wheeled my mom into the hospital room a week ago, and he looked up and mouthed, 'Mom.' Gives us a lot of hope," he said. "You never think the flu is going to impact your life in a possibly terminal way."Much of his prognosis remains uncertain, but Mike is optimistic, though he's still a bit in shock over how this came about.Two recent studies suggest the flu can trigger strokes and lead to a prolonged risk lasting months. In Dave's case, he will survive his stroke. "Very thankful and very grateful. My brother has always been a stubborn, forceful man ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new COVID-19 testing site opened Wednesday morning at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, with tests for the virus available at no cost.The free test site is located at the PedEast crossing of the Port of Entry. It will be open 6:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.About 200 tests will be administered daily, and no appointments will be necessary. San Diego County health officials said those getting tested “will not be asked about their immigration status or who lives with them.”Health officials said the site is focused on “testing essential workers and American citizens who live in Tijuana, as well as residents in the area.”Jennifer Bransford-Koons, the county’s testing director, said it’s possible the hours at the new site could eventually change.“We’re starting out first thing in the morning as people cross the border … to be able to see if that’s a good time to have people to be able to test. If that doesn’t work, then we’ll move to the afternoon or other days of the week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man caught on video peering into a Pacific Beach home has neighbors on edge.The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she was woken up by the sound of police officers knocking on her door in the area of Mission Blvd. and Emerald St. early Tuesday.Officers told her that her neighbor was alerted to an individual in the alley between their residences by his security camera. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A newly discovered comet flew past Earth early on Saturday, giving those who awoke early enough to catch it quite a show.Comet Neowise was spotted by a NASA telescope by the same name on March 27, according to NASA. Since then, the space agency says the comet has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, including Parker Solar Probe, NASA’s Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.NASA says the comet came within Mercury's orbit on July 3, where the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris trail.Neowise, which measures about three miles across, will be visible in Earth's Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it will change course and head toward the outer solar system, NASA says.For the next few days, the comet will be visible about an hour before sunrise in the northeastern sky in the U.S., NASA adds. Depending on local conditions, Neowise may be visible shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12."In its discovery images, Comet Neowise appeared as a glowing, fuzzy dot moving across the sky even when it was still pretty far away," said Amy Mainzer, Neowise principal investigator at the University of Arizona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there.
