BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang has called on the country's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises to improve workplace safety and avoid accidents among workers.Zhang made the comments during an inspection tour in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday to six major state companies, including China Petrochemical Corp., Shenhua Group Corp. Ltd., and China State Construction Engineering Corp.Further, Zhang urged these businesses to attach great importance to monitoring workplace safety and improving safety management systems.He asked enterprises to increase input in production safety management, promote research and development, as well as the application of new technologies and equipment that would help improve the safety of workers.Zhang also demanded efforts be made to improve staff trainings on creating safe work conditions.

XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. Hui ordered local governments to intensify flood warnings, improve response plans, reinforce reservoirs and river embankments and replenish emergency materials, so as to be well prepared for more rain and floods. 

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader in charge of disciplinary and supervision work Thursday stressed the need for higher-caliber anti-graft officials in the country's fight against corruption.He Guoqiang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a forum with representatives of municipal-district level anti-corruption officials.He, also head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, told the anti-corruption officials to stand firm in their faith of socialism and remain vigilant in the fight against corruption.He said the officials should improve their work skills through theoretical studies and training.The anti-corruption officials should always be people-oriented and carefully listen to public opinion, He said.He also told the officials that it was imperative for them to be self-disciplined and clean-handed to show an example.China trained more than 2,000 anti-graft officials at county level nationwide in 2009 and over 400 officials at city level in this June.About 850 anti-graft officials at municipal-district level around China are being trained in Beijing currently.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. The Geely-Volvo deal has won approval from the Chinese government."With this the decks are now clear for Geely to complete its acquisition of Volvo and start manufacturing the brand in China," said Wang Zhile, director of the research center on transnational corporations under the Ministry of Commerce.Yuan Xiaolin, Geely's spokesman for the Volvo deal was unavailable on Thursday for comment. However, unnamed sources from Geely told China Daily that the Zhejiang-based automaker will hold a formal function on Monday to complete the deal.Geely's shares surged nearly 11.32 percent and closed at HK.95 per share in Hong Kong on Thursday.Privately owned Geely paid .8 billion to acquire the Volvo car brand from Ford on March 28 this year. It was the biggest overseas deal made by Chinese automakers in recent times.Geely Chairman Li Shufu had at that time indicated that the company would invest 0 million as operating capital in Volvo apart from the US.8 billion purchase price.Geely said on July 15 that it had appointed Li as the chairman of the board at Volvo Car Corp.
