And to kind of further the reach of Help a Child Smile, I created a non-profit called Mila Foundation to kind of support the oral healthcare services provided by Help a Child Smile," said Siya K.This year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts have done everything from create theater access for children with disabilities to engineer an insulin calculator app. Julia T. lobbied for menstrual equity in her home state of Colorado."Definitely, it began within my own high school where I saw a lot of girls struggling to handle their menstrual cycles with dignity and efficiency in the learning environment. Because of varying incomes in our school and also the lack of accessibility, it made it so that girls had a hard time being able to talk about such private matters with their teachers. So, they would have to leave school and miss class," said Julia T.Julia was working with her local legislator to expand access to menstrual products in schools. The bill went to the House Committee for Education before the pandemic. She hopes to bring it back before legislators in the future. "What I love about the Gold Award is it's really a culmination of the Girl Scout experience, because at every level girls are taught to take agency and action on issues they care about. With the Gold Award, it's the highest award you can earn in Girl Scouts," said Kelly Parisi, the VP of Executive and Brand Communications at the Girl Scouts of the USA. Parisi says Gold Award Girl Scouts are tasked with developing long standing change for an issue they care about.Each council across the country submits three of their most exceptional Gold Award Girl Scouts and a panel chooses the top ten. "We are so proud of these ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts but we are equally as proud of thousands of girls across the country who earned their Gold Award and are looking to take action on issues in their community they care about," said Parisi.Julia and Siya hope their achievements inspire other girls across the country to work hard and recognize the impact they can have on the world. "The biggest thing I would say is dream big. Don't think that your issue is too big to solve. Just focus on taking small steps at a time. Don't be afraid in reaching out to people and connecting with people because people are more than willing to help," said Siya."I believe policy makers want to hear from you on the issues that affect you and your demographic so just taking advantage of being a youth and having that sort of power where people want to hear your voice on how matters affect you and just be incredibly persistent in the face of opposition," said Julia.As part of earning a National Gold Award, these ten girl scouts will also receive tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarship money. 3767

One pilot is dead and another hospitalized after a plane crash at a Texas Air Force base.An Air Force T-38C Talon crashed Tuesday night at the Laughlin Air Force Base, according to a statement from the base. OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) — The regional shutdown of many business sectors begins Sunday at 11:59 p.m., leaving thousands of people jobless in the middle of the holiday season.Donald Murray is a regular customer at Copperwood Barber Shop in Oceanside."[I get the] 'High and tight' I guess is what they call it," Murray laughed. "Low maintenance."Brothers Allen and Sherman Morris opened the shop in 1988, serving thousands of customers simple cuts. But this year, business has been anything but simple."We don't understand why they keep shutting us down," barber Adriana Hinojosa sighed.Hinojosa says since the pandemic began in March, customer numbers dipped under 50%. Owner Sherman Morris has not been into his shop due to health risks."We don't want him to get sick," Hinojosa said.The old school shop made adjustments with every new restriction, serving customers in every other chair, buying sanitation goods, and even going outside for a few weeks."This summer, it was hot, we were sweating, the customers were sweating, so it was kind of hard," Hinojosa said.But once again, they must shut their doors completely. On Monday, social media website Reddit banned r/The_Donald, a subreddit devoted to discussing President Donald Trump, as a part of a purge of more than 2,000 groups on the site that were in violation of the social media site's rules, according to The New York Times and The Verge.The move marks a stark change in Reddit policy. Previously, Reddit has allowed groups and individuals more leeway when censoring content on the site.Launched in 2015 along with Trump's presidential campaign, r/The_Donald grew to nearly 800,000 members before it was removed from Reddit. While the group did not have any affiliation with Trump or the Trump campaign, the then-Republican nominee participated in an "Ask Me Anything" discussion in the group during the 2016 presidential campaign.The group has become known for a breeding ground for conspiracy theories. According to reports, the group helped propel the "Pizzagate" theory that led to the arrest of an armed man at a D.C.-area pizza restaurant shortly after the 2016 election. It also routinely hosted Islamophobic discussions and promoted other content many considered to be racist.According to a disclaimer, Reddit says r/The_Donald was banned violating Rules 1 (harassment, threats of violence), 2 (spamming, vote manipulation) and 8 (don't break the site or do anything that interferes with the normal use of Reddit).Reddit had previously taken steps to curtail r/The_Donald. In June 2019, the network "quarantined" the site, meaning that the subreddit would not show up in search results and could not appear on the site's front page.
