BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen of 17 Vietnamese crew members were saved by a Chinese rescue team after strong winds sank the Vietnamese ship, the Hung Cuong 168, near Minjiang estuary in the East China Sea on Friday evening, the Chinese rescue center said.According to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center (CMSRC), the Vietnamese ship, which was overloaded with 5,200 tonnes of stone materials, had an engine breakdown this afternoon and overturned at around 5:00 p.m. due to high winds, with 17 crew members falling into the sea.Being alerted about the accident, China's East China Sea Rescue Bureau and the local maritime search and rescue center in the coastal Fujian Province sent professional salvage vessels and helicopters to the scene where they rescued 13 sailors, as of 6:18 p.m.The rescue team is still searching for the remaining four sailors, according to the CMSRC.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Saturday discussed the latest situation on the Korean Peninsula in phone calls with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and Japanese foreign minister Seiji Maehara.The discussions follow an artillery exchange between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in waters off the west coast of the divided peninsula on Tuesday.During the conversations, Yang said safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula served the common interests of concerned parties.Those parties should call on the DPRK and South Korea to exercise calmness and restraint and hold dialogue and make contacts, and not to take actions that would escalate the conflict, he said.He said all parties should work together to help cool the situation as soon as possible and effectively ensure no repeat of such conflict.Meanwhile, the Chinese minister expressed the hope that concerned parties would take a reasonable and pragmatic approach to actively create favorable conditions for resuming the six-party talks.The parties should also commit themselves to establish related mechanisms at an early date to eliminate various factors threatening peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole region.Lavrov said Russia agreed with China on the latest situation and was ready to keep close contact with China to help defuse the tensions on the peninsula and create conditions for a restart of the six-party talks.Maehara said that Japan is willing to work together with China to jointly safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and push forward the denuclearization process of the Peninsula.During Tuesday's incident, shells landed on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island near the contentious sea border called Northern Limit Line (NLL). China's GDP has grown by an annual average of 9.9%, and the Chinese economy is one of the largest in the world. China has steadily expanded the opening-up program. It is now the second largest trading nation in the world. China has remained the top recipient of foreign investment among developing countries for years and its outbound investment ranks the fifth in the world. Having made the historic leap from mere subsistence to overall moderate prosperity, the Chinese people are enjoying much higher living standards. Per capita income has risen eight times and more than 200 million people have been lifted out of poverty. A minimum living allowance system covering both urban and rural areas is by and large in place. And the Chinese people are leading an increasingly fulfilling cultural life.Proud as we are of these accomplishments, the Chinese people are keenly aware of the problems we face in development.
