SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of San Diego high school seniors will be honored with other students from throughout Southern California Friday at the second annual Pacific Islander High School Graduate Recognition Ceremony in San Bernardino.Long Beach, Inland Empire and other surrounding regions will participate in the event, which will include cultural celebrations like a Polynesian fireknife performance and a Maori warrior dance.Siaosi Veimau, who immigrated to the U.S. from Tonga at age 10, will serve as the ceremony's keynote speaker. Veimau currently runs a Pacific Islander cultural group with his wife and San Diego State University's Pacific Islander Student Association.``My vision for every student is to discover who they are and to be intentional about their dreams and passions,'' Veimau said. ``Our Pacific Islander roots keep us grounded. It's important to remember who you are, where you grew up and to give back to the next generation.''The ceremony will be held at the San Bernardino Valley College's Greek Theatre and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Residents can visit pacificislandergrc.com for more information on the ceremony. 1158

SAN DIEGO — San Diegans can participate in AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial, which recently showed 90 percent effectiveness under a certain dosage.AstraZeneca announced Monday that its vaccine was 90 percent effective when participants started with a half dose, followed by a full dose at least four weeks later. It is currently seeking participants through UC San Diego Health and other partners for its ongoing trials. Full doses given four weeks apart were 62 percent effective in the trial. “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, in a statement released by AstraZeneca. "Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 percent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply."Elana Godebu, a UC San Diego urologist, said she has seen the impacts of Coronavirus firsthand. She is currently practicing at El Centro Regional Medical Center, affiliated with UC San Diego. She says the center is filling up because of a rise in local cases and patients coming up from Mexico. The state recently built a 50-bed tent in the parking lot for non-Covid patients. Godebu got the first dose of the vaccine two weeks ago, which also could have been a placebo."Personally I've seen my friends and my colleagues and my patients, they've gotten sick, they've lost family, they've lost friends, and so we got the AstraZenica trial out in El Centro," she said. Godebu said she encourages anyone who has an opportunity to get the vaccine to take advantage. "If we try to get to herd immunity the other way we're going to lose so many people," she said. AstraZenica is the latest drugmaker to report strong efficacy. Earlier this month, Pfizer and Moderna said their trials were 95 percent effective. AstraZenica says its vaccine could separate from the others because it can be transported, handled and stored at regular refrigerated temperatures and administered in regular health care settings. 2099

SAN DIEGO — The county has stepped up enforcement of its latest round of Coronavirus restrictions, which took effect Saturday.Nearly 20 organizations - bars, restaurants, yoga studios and churches - were served with cease and desist notifications for not following the purple tier, which mandated outdoor only service to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. At Reach Yoga in Pacific Beach, owner Alena Snedeker got a violation for holding socially distanced indoor yoga classes as late as Monday. She said she was aware it was no longer allowed, but was doing it as she transitioned to an outdoor location."With being open for two weeks, we can't turn the machine off," she said. "If we turn the machine off, we lose our business forever."Reach Yoga, which did not hold classes Tuesday, will rent outdoor space at the nearby Soledad Club, which it will have to share with a karate studio and church. "A yoga studio runs a lot differently than a bar or a restaurant or a church, so to have the same blanket over every single business. I don't feel that's right," Snedeker said. At The Landing Bar in El Cajon, owner Steven Fort also got a violation , as a group watched football indoors on Sunday."As long as they're not shutting me down, I'm complying," Fort said.Fort said he was confused over when the purple tier started, but is now fully outside.Meanwhile, in Pine Valley, Major's Diner continues to publicly defy the order - without a cease and desist order. A spokesman for the county says that's because the violations are complaint-based. He expects more to be added. 1588
