CHANGSHA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a fireworks blast in central China' s Hunan Province rose from an earlier announced nine to 12 after DNA tests results were completed , local authorities said Sunday night.Another two people were believed to be missing, police said, adding that three of the 12 victims were still to be identified.The blast, which also injured nine others, occurred in Ningxiang County of Changsha, the provincial capital, at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a truck loaded with fireworks fuses hit a power pole and sparks from fallen cables ignited the fuses.The blast destroyed the truck and nearby houses, shattering windows and cracking walls hundreds of meters away.Rescue work and clean-up at the site ended on Sunday, a local government spokesman said.The nine injured, who are being treated in hospital, are in stable conditions, according to the spokesman.However, the whereabouts of the truck driver remains unknown.Police continue investigating the accident.

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- "I can't afford an apartment, a car or a wife, but it never occurred to me until now that I can't even afford vegetables or fruit," said Gao Lei, a 30-year-old renter in Beijing."I went to a grocery store yesterday only to find that even apples, the cheapest fruit, are sold for 4 yuan half a kilogram, doubling the price from two months ago," said Gao.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. The hike was mainly due to a 10.1-percent surge in food prices. Jiang, however, has a new job, working as a janitor in Jinan-based Shandong Economic University.Jiang's family makes some 24,000 yuan (3,600 U.S. dollars) a year, half of which goes to paying tuition for their two college girls, with the majority of the rest covering their daughters' living expenses."We spend each penny carefully, because we try to save as much as possible for the kids. Though the cafeteria still serves low-price dishes, despite price hikes of vegetables lately, they serve less."He has a monthly living allowance of 300 yuan, which is given by his parents.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China hit a record 105.74 billion U.S. dollars last year, up 17.4 percent year on year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced Tuesday.In December alone, China attracted 14.03 billion U.S. dollars of FDI, up 15.6 percent year on year, making it the 17th consecutive month of FDI growth since August 2009.The rapid FDI growth could be attributed to robust development in the service sector and the country's central and western regions, said MOC spokesman Yao Jian.FDI in the service sector rose 28.6 percent last year and that in central and western regions climbed 27.6 percent year on year, Yao said.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore.
