SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego gyms are closing amid coronavirus, forcing residents to work out from home and sparking many tips on how to stay fit amid COVID-19. 24-Hour fitness, a popular San Diego gym, sent out a message Monday night noting that the gym would close March 16 until further notice. "As we all grapple with the enormous scale and impact of the coronavirus in the U.S., it reminds us of how precious life is and the importance of protecting our own health," CEO Tony Ueber said in a news release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue crews rescued a paraglider who crashed into a dangerous Torrey Pines bluff Friday.SDFD crews arrived at the site of the crash at around 1 p.m. Sky10 footage showed the person clinging to the cliff, wrapped in the wreckage of a broken glider, just over a section of Blacks Beach.Lt. Rich Stropky says the man was in training to become a paragliding pilot. He apparently attempted to make a left hand turn away from the bluff but lost control near Saddle Back ridge, said Stropky.RELATED: Cliff, air rescue numbers on rise in San Diego CountyCrews were able to airlift the person from the cliffside just after 2 p.m. He was immediately brought to a nearby hospital for his injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego Health say they can make a COVID-19 contact tracing app for smartphones but the technology may be getting pushback because of privacy concerns.On Tuesday, ABC10 News spoke to UC San Diego Health Chief Information Officer Dr. Christopher Longhurst about the app that he's offered to develop and study for San Diego County."From a University of California stand point, we're comfortable endorsing this as an appropriate means of helping control this pandemic more quickly while preserving the privacy of our citizens," he told ABC10 News.He said the app would look a lot like Canada's app which was released last Friday. Using a tool created by Apple and Google, it produces random codes and uses Bluetooth to ping other users' phones and share those codes when two people are physically close to each other. "So, the idea is that if I were diagnosed with COVID-19, I would then be given a code [and voluntarily opt in to] put that code into my exposure notification app and that would let other people know who had been near me that they might have been exposed and should be tested," he added.ABC10 News asked Dr. Longhurst about what situations could make it more effective than using human contact tracers. "Contact tracing is a methodology that's been around for 50 years and we've used it for sexually transmitted infections and other outbreaks. It works really well when you're talking about who you might have been intimate with. It's much harder when you think about who you breathed air with. [Additionally], there's limits to being able to actually contact those folks," he responded.When asked about why the technology isn't being implemented in San Diego County, he told ABC10 News, "Our partners at San Diego County Public Health have been very enthusiastic about embracing this new technology but the Apple and Google API can only be used by state public health agencies so we're dependent on the state of California to approve moving this forward."Other countries have moved forward but the U.S. has been slower. Dr. Longhurst attributes that to privacy concerns, but said the program protects anonymity and doesn't track location. "We've really closely evaluated this technology and we believe that the privacy preserving goals have been met," he added.On Tuesday, San Diego County officials confirmed that it's the state of California's decision to go forward and added in part, "If there is an opportunity for the County to partner with the state in a pilot, we would be open to further discussions about this."The California Department of Public Health sent the following response to ABC10 News."The state’s contact tracing program isn’t using contact tracing smartphone technology. Contact tracing involves notifying people who have been in close contact with an infected person to prevent the disease from spreading to others, and most of that work can be done by phone, text, email and chat.We are aware of San Diego's interest in utilizing a contact tracing application. We continue to focus on standing up the manual contact tracing process (via phone, text, email and chat) and the data management tool that assists our contact tracing workforce." 3226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County is working to make it easier for San Diegans to get flu shots, which health officials say is especially important this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.On Thursday, local leaders kicked off efforts to promote flu vaccinations. Over the course of the next few weeks, they will be hosting pop-up clinics across the county where people can get free flu shots.The pop-up clinics are designed for those who don’t have insurance or those who can’t get the vaccine from their health care provider or pharmacy.Valentina Christiansen came to one of the clinics to get flu shots for her family. She said, “I think it’s great because I tried to go through our health plan and that’s over a month out, and we wanted to get it sooner. We heard about the opportunity and we’re excited to be able to do that.”Dr. Denise Foster, chief nursing officer for the county, said getting the flu vaccine can also help in the battle against the coronavirus. Keeping flu patients out of the hospital frees up beds and resources for those fighting COVID-19.“The flu vaccine can prevent the flu and prevent people from seeking health care services that might be needed right now connected to the pandemic,” Foster said.Foster added there are more people that have gotten the flu vaccine this year in comparison to this same time last year.
