CARLSBAD (CNS) - A Carlsbad man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly killing his roommate.Patrol officers responding to a report of a death in the 2500 block of West Ranch Street at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday found a 40-year-old woman dead in an apartment in the neighborhood near the intersection of El Camino Real and Tamarack Avenue, police said.Her name was withheld pending family notification.Detectives questioned the woman's roommate, 44-year-old Brehon Roy Quigley, then arrested him, Carlsbad police Lt. Jason Jackowski said. Quigley was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of murder.Police declined to release details on how the victim died and would not disclose a suspected motive for the alleged slaying."The investigation into what occurred and why is ongoing," the lieutenant said. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — Shortly after the De Luz Fire ignited on Camp Pendleton Wednesday, an unnamed Gunnery Sergeant jumped into action to evacuate more than 70 students.The brush fire broke out on base just after 12 p.m., prompting several precautionary evacuations of nearby structures, including schools, businesses, and hundreds of homes in the DeLuz Housing area.While there were no students or staff at Mary Fay Elementary School at the time of the fire, the base says, there were 73 students at the nearby Child Development Center that needed to be evacuated.An unnamed Gunnery Sgt. with the Provost Marshall’s Office commandeered a city transit bus to evacuate the children and residents, the base said. Emergency Services Battalion police and fire crews, along with NCIS agents, also helped transfer each student to the evacuation point to be reunited with their families."This Gunnery Sgt. exhibited but one example of the brave, fast-thinking actions that were taken this day," a release from Camp Pendleton officials said.Within three hours of sparking, the De Luz Fire was largely stamped out by firefighters as high temperatures brought an elevated threat of wildfires to the county on Wednesday."Their quick and heavy response, deploying all available units and requesting aid from CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Authority, allowed for residents to return to their homes within four hours after evacuating," the release added.The only loss from the fire was an NCIS government vehicle, according to officials. Chicago police announced at a Monday morning news conference that 66 people were shot, 12 of them fatally, between Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11:59 p.m.Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said it was "no secret that we had an unacceptably violent weekend," at the news conference.In three hours beginning at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, records show, 30 people were shot and two killed in 10 incidents. In all, over the weekend, there were 33 shooting incidents. Fourteen juveniles were shot, and an 11- and 13-year-old were killed."The city of Chicago experienced a violent night," Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday afternoon. "Some of these instances were targeted and were related to gang conflicts in those areas."In at least one incident, shooters opened fire into a crowded street party, Waller said.Johnson said the issue stemmed from a small group of people such as repeat gun offenders."This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of this city. This is a small subset of individuals who think they can play by their own rules because they continue to get a slap on the wrist when we arrest them," Johnson said."I'm tired of it. Everybody in this city should be tired of it."Johnson said 46 people were arrested this weekend on gun charges, and 60 guns were seized as a result of ongoing investigations. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - The dollar value racked up by the Apple store bandits is now climbing toward the million-dollar mark.Surveillance images from an Apple store in Carlsbad in May show a group of men in hoodies walking in and immediately getting to work."They quickly grab the products on display near the front of the store," said Mark Herrring, coordinator of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers program.Investigators believe the same men hit the same store in June and several times in July."They flee the store, usually to a vehicle that is waiting for them," said Herring.The thieves have apparently shopped around for local targets.  Authorities released more images from a similar case at an Apple store at Westfield North County on July 9.  Detectives believe the local cases are linked to other grab-and-runs from across the state this year."Currently there are  approximately 30 cases throughout the state. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Tuesday night a teen was seen on camera stealing a decoration right off a home's walkway.The Klus family moved to Bressi Ranch three months ago, from Boston, and were thrilled to become part of the neighborhood tradition."I'm totally blown away I had no idea it was this extensive and this creative and it's incredible the scenes of it come up with the kids are loving it," Visitor Amanda Alcorn said."When we moved here the kids were super excited super pumped to be included in the decorating," Nora Klus said. She has a daughter in 5th grade and a son in 2nd grade.They transformed their entry into Skele-topia, a night at the movies.Wednesday morning she noticed something was wrong. She looked at the footage on her Ring Neighbors App from the night before, "I saw a few, it looked like teenagers, and then the last one in the group just snatched our little decoration.""My son was crushed, he was like why would anyone do that?"
