CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- This afternoon,  friends and family said their final good-byes to Justin Meek, the Coronado native who died in the Borderline Bar shooting on November 8, 2018. On the same day, students at Sage Creek High School read letters of appreciation to their loved ones. One student wrote his message to his older sister who survived the shooting in Thousand Oaks. Teenagers are not known to pour out their feelings. But for Sage Creek High School students, it is a requirement for their English class. As part of a senior assignment called "Project Gratitude," students expressed their thanks to those who helped shape their lives. They were to write a letter, call the recipient, and reflect. “I know I don’t show it often, but I’m so proud to have you as my mom,” Izabella Razmi said. Her letter was to her mother, US Navy Captain Shay Razmi. During her deployments, Izabella was the woman of the house.  954

CALEXICO, Calif. -- High school seniors around the country are coping with missed milestones like prom and walking across the graduation stage. "Our students invested 12, 13 years in their education, so we must invest in something to give them back, a ceremony they can be proud of," said John Moreno, principal of Aurora High Continuation in Calexico, California. Several of the students graduating will be the first in their families to get a diploma. Students come to the continuation school for a fresh start; many were at risk of not graduating. "It's a very big deal, many of them have not received any accolades, or any awards or any kind of recognition, any kind of victory. So when we see them with this victory, this is a big one," said Moreno. When graduation was canceled due to COVID-19, students and their families were devastated.So the district wanted to do something special, enlisting help from VEGO Pictures to create a virtual graduation. The Hollywood production company changed its business model seemingly overnight to create virtual graduations for schools around the country. The move also helped employ Hollywood producers and directors out of work due to the pandemic. With guidance from a VEGO Pictures producer, schools tape various clips they'd like to include in the virtual ceremony, and then the production company handles the rest. Customized for each school, the ceremony is a tribute to student's talents and achievements from the last four years. Anyone around the world can tune in to the virtual ceremony."I think it's pretty cool!" said Lorenzo Lopez, an Aurora High graduate. "Since it's going to be recorded and not in person, I can save it and watch it another time and show it to my kids and my grandkids."While disappointed they couldn't have a traditional ceremony, students say they're grateful to at least have this memory. 1879

(KGTV) — The grandmother of the 17-year-old who's accused of stabbing Lisa Thorborg to death on a Carlsbad hiking trail in November doesn't believe her grandson could have committed the crime.Christie Hernandez said that she talked to her grandson, Haloa Beaudet, just after Tuesday's virtual court hearing where new surveillance images were revealed and the judge allowed the release of the teen's name. Images of his face have been ordered to remain withheld from the public."[He said] 'I'm strong. I'm going to be positive. You and papa [don't need to] worry. Tell everyone in the family that I'm okay and I'll be home soon," Hernandez told ABC 10News.RELATED: Judge releases name of Carlsbad teen murder suspect, new surveillance imagesOn Wednesday, the DA's Office confirmed that it filed a motion to request that the teen be tried as an adult but that it will take almost a year before a hearing is set where a judge will make the determination.The prosecution said this week that a surveillance camera captured Beaudet running barefoot on the street away from the trail a few minutes after Thorborg was believed to have been killed.Other images show him on the trail in the days after the murder. Detectives said that his DNA was found on the victim's shorts and a pair of his sandals were found near her body. His attorneys argue that he is a free spirit who often left his sandals behind and Thorborg may have picked them up, which is how his DNA got on her."He would not have done this. It's like stabbing me in the neck," added Hernandez.Hernandez said that he had been living with her and doing online schooling for the last two months after moving to San Diego from Hawaii. She described him as a kind young man who is incapable of violence. "We go to the store and he's helping little old ladies pick out which watermelons are good and which grapes are the sweetest and holding doors open. So, this just really baffles me," she stated. "They got the wrong person. The killer's still out there."The teen's attorneys said that no weapons were found on him and that he had no injuries or signs of struggle on his body. 2154

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Community members gathered outside Carlsbad Police Department on Friday, demanding change following a controversial encounter last week between an African American man and Carlsbad officers.“There was zero attempt for de-escalation,” said Yusef Miller with North County Civil Liberties Coalition. “We're asking that all citizens stand with us in solidarity to fight this police brutality," another activist told reporters.The Carlsbad Police Department previously released video which juxtaposed three camera angles of the confrontation with the Marcel Cox-Harshaw -- two from officer body cameras and one from a witness. The footage can be viewed here.The witness' phone shows officers using a Taser on Harshaw and pressing his head into the pavement. The two other videos from police body cameras show officers meeting medics who were called out to a report of a man face down on the side walk. Police say that while medics were evaluating him, he became agitated, yelled profanities and began walking quickly toward them.The department says that officers feared for the medics' safety, so they reached out and told him to stop, but he continued to yell as they tried to cuff him.Officers report that they then used a Taser to try to subdue him after he continued to yell, struggle, turn and pull away.Police report that they then restrained him by holding his head and body to the ground and asking him to calm down while cuffing him, but they say that he refused. The department goes on to say that they put a porous, breathable spit mask bag over his head to protect themselves from coming into contact with droplets from his nose and mouth.Activists dispute the department's account of the night.“They approached him from behind. They grabbed his wrist. They didn't introduce themselves. He wasn't harming anyone. He wasn't armed to our knowledge,” added Miller.Harshaw was taken to the hospital and later released and then cited for resisting arrest. Police believe that drugs or alcohol may have played a role.Police report that a number of factors were considered by officers to use force, including, in part, "The apparent immediacy and severity of the threat to officers or others - Mr. Harshaw charged unarmed fire personnel while yelling profanities."Police also reveal that a Taser can be used, in part, when, "The subject is violent or is physically resisting. Mr. Harshaw was physically resistant and behaved aggressively toward fire personnel."Community members are calling for reforms like a public forum for transparency on arrests, more de-escalation training, and a citizen's review board.Police say the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone who may have seen the incident to give them a call.On Friday, the Carlsbad Police Department sent the following to ABC10 News:“The City of Carlsbad Police Department has been asked to comment on the North County Civil Liberties Coalition Press Conference.”“The Police Department has previously released information about the June 11, incident. To that end and to provide additional information, here is a list of de-escalation related training that has been provided to Carlsbad Police officers.In December of 2015, officers received an 8-hours of Emotional Intelligence Training.In 2017, officers received an 8-hour Crisis Intervention Behavior Health Training.In 2018, Officers received a 2-hour Bias Based Policing Training and will receive the training again in the summer of 2020.In November or 2018, officers received a 2-hour Tactical Communications Training and will received this training again in November of 2020.In December of 2019 and January of 2020, officers received training about changes to the law and the use of force. This was part of AB 392.In December of 2019, the Police Department hosted and had officers attend the first De-Escalation Training offered by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. The department assisted the District Attorney’s Office with the creation of the training curriculum.In 2020, the department created, with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Office, an 8-hour in-house De-Escalation Course. CA?ON CITY, Co. -- The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park has been a place providing natural beauty and adrenaline rushing rides for 91 years.“It’s history,” said Chad Harris, who works at the admissions desk. “It’s one of the most iconic places in the United States, and I feel honored to work here.” Harris said the park has been a special part of his life. He was an intern at the park several years ago and then came back to work full-time.“My family worked here, my brother, my sister my mom,” Harris said. “I wanted to come back to this place and have a career here.” But seven years ago, Harris watched decades of memories go up in flames. The Royal Gorge Bridge and Park was destroyed by a wildfire. The bridge was nearly all that was left.The heartbreak of the fire—only preparing Harris and his team for the challenges that COVID-19 would bring.“I honestly thought the fire was the worst thing that could happen to us,” said Peggy Gair, who manages public relations for the park.Gair has been with the park for more than 20 years and said the virus was a new strain of devastation.“Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d be closed for that many weeks, the two and a half months that we were,” Gair said. She said the fire was different—the park had insurance and was prepared to rebuild. No one could have prepared them for the pandemic.Just before the pandemic hit, employees spent dozens of hours and thousands of dollars hiring 30 new employees. Days later, they had to let everyone go, and now, the process to rehire is more complicated than ever before.Gair is signed up for a new way to find workers: a live, virtual job fair. She’s hoping to fill dozens of open positions around the park. Some of those jobs have been available since last year, and now, Gair believes the extra 0 a week in unemployment benefits is playing a role in keeping people from applying.“There’s jobs available,” Gair said. “People aren’t excited to go back to work. They want to wait.” Gair is hoping that after July 31, more people will come to her park looking for work.Despite the struggle, Gair said she looks at the park today like she did in 2013—as a beacon of hope.
