ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. Women should be encouraged, she said, to gain the spirit of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance.Chen also urged countries around the world to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in policy-making regarding gender equality.

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 300 Chinese and Ukrainian officials, business executives and traders gathered at a trade forum Friday to seek bilateral business opportunities. SHANGHAI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's intellectual property rights (IPR) authorities Saturday vowed to play a larger role in the global cause of IPR protection while being more responsible to innovators and the public.The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Director Tian Lipu made the pledge at a press conference held to recognize the 25th anniversary of Sino-EU cooperation on IPR protection.Tian said that China and the EU, as two major economies with close trade relations, should further co-operate to create a better environment to encourage and protect innovation in the business world.At the event, European Patent Office (EPO) President Benoit Battistelli told Xinhua he was optimistic about the future of IPR protection in China, given the rapid progress being made in the country.Battistelli said relations between the EPO and the SIPO would "continue to be decisive for the successful future development of the patent system on a global level."Commemorations of the anniversary, held at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo, also included a demonstration of a real-world IPR enforcement case in a moot court setting.The EPO started cooperating with China in 1985. The two sides are currently implementing the EU-China IPR2 project utilizing a 16 million Euros budget that runs over four years to 2011.Both the EPO and the SIPO are among the world's five largest patent offices, together with the Japan Patent Office, the Korean IP Office, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.China has also grown into one of the most important non-EU countries filing patent applications to the EPO, with the number of patents submitted increasing from 163 in 2000 to 1,621 in 2009.

NAIROBI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki met here Friday with chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature with both promising to make efforts to enhance bilateral ties.During the meeting, Chen expressed appreciation to President Kibaki and the Kenya government for the pivotal role they played in brokering peace in Sudan and the horn of Africa.Chen assured President Kibaki that China would provide the necessary support for peace and stability in the horn of Africa."Kenya, as a neighbor and the guarantor to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Sudan, requires the support and not condemnation from the international community in her efforts to broker peace in Sudan," Chen said.The Chinese official also congratulated President Kibaki and other coalition government partners for the passage and promulgation of the country's new constitution.She thanked Kenya's support for the One-China policy.The two also exchanged views on enhancing Kenya-China cooperation under the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC).President Kibaki hailed the cordial bilateral and trade relations between the two countries which have continued to flourish through exchange visits at all levels.The Kenyan president particularly expressed gratitude to China for its immense contribution to the African country's infrastructure development over the past years.Kibaki noted with appreciation that China is today one of the leading bilateral donors to Kenya's infrastructure development with a cumulative official development assistance reaching 36.7 billion Shillings.China and Kenya have signed agreements and MOUs in various fields including technical and cultural cooperation, trade, education, health, energy, agriculture and cooperative development.
