For the first time, accused Waffle House gunman Travis Reinking has broken his silence.Reinking has been accused of murdering four people and injuring four others in a mass shooting at the Antioch, Tennessee restaurant last month. Four people – 29-year-old Taurean Sanderlin, of Goodlettsville; 20-year-old Joe Perez, of Nashville; 21-year-old DeEbony Groves, of Gallatin; and 23-year-old Akilah DaSilva, of Antioch – were killed. Reinking was arrested the next day after a massive manhunt, booked into the jail and then he decided he wanted to talk. He's locked up and undergoing a mental evaluation. In an exclusive interview, Reinking breaks his silence about his case. He called reporter Nick Beres at Scripps station WTVF from maximum security at the Davidson County Jail. Reinking said he wanted to talk about his case, his mental health and his lawyers. "About what I'm thinking and what I, I'd like to say on my behalf and stuff like that," Reinking said. In the days after his arrest, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall talked about Reinking's behavior and compared him to another accused mass shooter in the jail. That would be Emanuel Samson, who's charged with killing one person last year at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, also in Antioch. "I would use the word a little bit more normal for this one compared to the Emanuel [Samson] case, as it relates to interaction. That's probably the word that's been used the most," Hall said at the time. Since Reinking's arrest, many have wondered if he will try using the insanity defense. When asked about his mental fitness he said, "Yeah, no… I'm perfectly healthy." As for the shooting at the Waffle House? He wasn't ready to talk about that. "I'd rather not in the setting I'm at right now," Reinking said. But he did talk about his pending criminal case. Reinking has two appointed lawyers, but he said he plans to handle his own legal defense. "That's the thing, I'm choosing to represent myself. I don't know how that works. I didn't like those attorneys," Reinking said. He will likely address that at his next court appearance on June 1. Obviously, there were more questions to ask, but Reinking's call time expired. Also, since Reinking talked about the case he now appears to have violated a gag order and could face a contempt charge, so, no more calls are allowed. For parents preparing to start this school year with their children at home, there are concerns about children adapting mentally and emotionally to another semester away from their schoolmates and teachers.“I am a parent myself, so I can relate to the anxiety,” said Janine Domingues, a clinical psychologist with the Child Mind Institute.Domingues says parents have very good reason to be concerned.“For children or adolescents who were already prone to anxiety or social anxiety or depression, certainly this time, as you are more isolated and can’t interact with others, it can heighten anxiety and depression symptoms,” said Domingues.There are warning signs parents can look for to recognize if the isolation and social distancing are getting to their child.“Further isolation in their room, not getting out of bed, not engaging in activity that they normally would’ve engaged in,” said Domingues. “And honestly, if they are expressing sadness every day and in intense levels of that.”If a parent sees some of those warning signs, they are strongly encouraged to take action.“The number one step is reaching out for mental health services,” said Domingues. “Whether it is reaching out to a previous psychologist or therapist that you worked with or a new psychologist.”Organizations like the Child Mind Institute provide telehealth services for children struggling mentally and emotionally right now, and they even provide financial assistance for families concerned about affording the sessions.However, before it gets to the point where a child may need help, Domingues said there are steps parents can take to help their child adjust better to this start of the school year at home.“Really talking about it, honestly,” said Domingues. “Helping them understand that there might be another time where we are doing this at home.”She said parents should ask their children about their concerns, ask what worked well at the end of last semester and what did not, and ask the child about what they think they will feel at the start of this semester.“It can feel very overwhelming and anxiety-provoking, but again, it’s just taking one step at a time and talking through it,” said Domingues.Domingues, and most psychologists, believe kids are resilient and with the proper guidance, they can adapt to whatever schooling situation they’ll be in this fall. 2363

"Who knows what employers will come up with next?"America is undergoing a massive nursing shortage. Not only are experienced nurses retiring at a rapid clip, but there aren't enough new nursing graduates to replenish the workforce, said Ross.The nation's aging population is exacerbating the problem. The American Nurses Association estimates the U.S. will need to produce more than one million new registered nurses by 2022 to fulfill the country's health care needs.UCHealth, which operates nine acute-care hospitals and more than 100 clinics across Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska, currently has 330 openings for registered nurses.
