(AP) — The California Democratic Party is investigating allegations of sexual misconduct against chairman Eric Bauman.A party vice chairman, Daraka Larimore-Hall, brought the charges against Bauman last week on behalf of anonymous accusers and called for Bauman's resignation. RIVER ROUGE, Michigan —The mother of a 3-year-old boy who was shot in a drive-by in River Rouge, Michigan on Sunday said her home was set on fire early Monday morning.Police say 3-year-old Jamar Lee Quinn Jr. was shot around 2:45 a.m. local time on Sunday when a bullet came from behind the house where he resides.Jamar was hit in the head while sleeping and was taken to the hospital. He's listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Danielle said he is unresponsive and on a ventilator.This is not the first time the home has been hit by bullets. The change comes amid national calls to dismantle systemic and unconscious racism, starting with public education.The bill was authored by local Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus and longtime professor of Africana Studies at San Diego State University.“What we are seeing in Washington and on American streets right now demonstrates the necessity of understanding the experiences and perspectives of these historically marginalized and oppressed groups who have nonetheless contributed to the building of our country,” Weber said in a statement. “This is great day for students and for the state. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a law requiring California to house transgender inmates in prisons based on their gender identity. The new law says the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation must ask inmates during the intake process if they identify as transgender, nonbinary or intersex. Those inmates can then request to be placed in a facility that houses either men or women. The law says the state can deny requests if it has management or security concerns. If that happens, the state must give the inmate a written explanation and allow them an meaningful opportunity to object. 634

The Legislative Analyst’s Office released a report Thursday saying the state has seen a reduction in its inmate population because of early releases and other actions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also says parole and sentencing law changes may flatten the prison population in the next few years. The report says the population changes, coupled with closing five adult prisons and three juvenile facilities, could save the corrections system .5 billion a year by 2025."The administration has indicated it plans to close one prison in 2021?22 and another in 2022?23 in order to accommodate the ongoing decline in the inmate population, primarily resulting from Proposition 57 (2016)" the analysis reads.
