BEIJING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday urged his colleagues from the private sector not to lay off workers to help maintain social stability amid the global economic turmoil.     Jia, Chairman of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said this in a report delivered at the second session of the 11th CPPCC National Committee, which convened Tuesday at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing. Jobless migrant workers alone exceed 20 million, not to mention millions of graduates swarming into the job market every year. They must also take up greater social responsibility," said Wang.     According to media reports, the ongoing CPPCC session and upcoming session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, will have deputies and advisors from more than 150 listed companies.     These companies account for about 10 percent of the firms listed on the yuan-denominated market. They include executives of large financial companies such as China Life Insurance (Group) Company and Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China.     Jia also urged political advisors from the ethnic minorities and religious circles to play a unique role in the drive for ethnic unity and religious harmony.     The top political advisor also expressed support for the government's handling of unrest in Tibet in March last year.     "We unequivocally supported the Party and government in dealing with the destructive, disruptive, violent and illegal incidents in Lhasa, Tibet, and other areas in accordance with the law," Jia said.     Jia's speech was echoed by members from the religious circle. Advisor Huang Xinyang, president of the Beijing Taoism Association, said that the speech reflects the heartfelt wishes of advisors from the religious circle, who support the ideal of social harmony and national unity.     "A handful of separatists who advocate 'Tibet independence' do not represent the people of the religious circle and they are doomed to failure," said Huang.     Advisor Ma Guoquan from northwest Ningxia Hui Autonomous Regionsaid: "The religious policy we have now is the most appropriate. Believers have the full freedom to engage in religious activities. There is no reason for making trouble."

BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters launched an orange alert on Wednesday, urging local authority to be fully aware of the grim situation and give drought-relief work top priority.     The unprecedented drought which started last November, has affected 146 million mu (9.73 million hectares) of crops nationwide by February 4, among which 42.19 million mu are severely affected, according to the latest figure released by the headquarter office.     About 139 million of wheat land in the eight wheat-producing provinces were threatened, comprising 46 percent of the total wheat croplands in the areas. Drought has hit most of Henan Province, one of China's key wheat producing regions, due to lack of rainfall since last October.Some 3.98 million people and 1.95 million livestock are short of drinking water.     The headquarter office asked local governments to be accountable for relief work and make every effort to expand irrigation areas.     The local authority should enact integrated plans on water distribution to minimize the risk of the drought, according to an emergency notice by the headquarter office.     Four more working teams were sent to the drought-hit areas on Monday to supervise the relief work.     The Ministry of Finance is expected to arrange more funds, after the previous 100 million yuan (14.6 million U.S. dollars) to support the relief effort.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton here on Saturday, stressing that it is of ever great importance to further deepen and develop Sino-U.S. relations.     Hu appreciated Clinton for her inaugural visit to China and other parts of Asia since taking office, saying this reflects the importance the new U.S. administration puts on developing relations with China and other Asian countries.     Clinton said she had "very good meetings" with Chinese officials during her visit, which she called the beginning of "a new era" of Sino-U.S. relations characterized by positive cooperation. BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China will foster a number of globally competitive logistics companies by 2011, said a stimulus plan of the country's logistics industry released on the government website on Friday.     All departments and local governments are urged to make efforts to achieve the goal, according to the plan, issued by the State Council, or the cabinet.     It said local authorities should help logistics companies solve problems in their development, realize a 10-percent annual growth in their output and lower the proportion of logistics expenses in the country's GDP.     The cabinet said in a notice that the country's logistics industry was affected by the unfolding global financial crisis. The stimulus plan was designated not only to promote its industrial upgrade but support development of other industries, expand consumption and increase employment.     As a composite service industry, logistics, comprising transport, storage, information industries and freight agencies, is an important part of national economy, said the plan.     The cabinet has rolled out support plans for ten industries including steel, auto and textile, targeting industrial growth, as well as restructuring and upgrading.
