Babies have such a bad reputation when it comes to staying quiet on plane rides that some parents go so far as to hand out treats to fellow passengers before the plane has even taken off. Indeed, George and Amal Clooney, world travelers and parents of twin babies, made headlines late last year for gifting headphones to some passengers, along with a note apologizing in advance for any crying. While there’s no need to pack dozens of gifts in your diaper bag, travel and parenting experts recommend other strategies to increase your chances of a smooth flight with your baby. 603

ATLANTA, Ga. – For more than six decades, Manuel’s Tavern has been the spot in Atlanta for people who love politics.“The quintessential political bar,” said Angelo Fuster, who knew the tavern’s original owner, Manuel Maloof, who got into politics himself decades ago. “Every election, we've been here. It is a place that a lot of people here gravitate to.”Folks will be there again on January 5, because the nation’s political attention is now zeroing in on Georgia, where the fate of the U.S. Senate hangs in the balance.Georgia isn’t exactly used to all this attention. The state has reliably been a Republican stronghold for decades. In 2020, though, it’s emerged as the last of the battleground states, with the final two Senate races of this election cycle. In one race, incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue faces Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff. In the second race, incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler faces Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock.“For all those Georgians who are tired of the campaign ads, of their mailboxes being flooded with advertisements from campaigns as well -- get used to it,” said Bernard Fraga, an associate professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta.Fraga said both major political parties will be throwing their efforts into the two Senate races.“We're gonna have another two months of both sides, the Democratic and Republican candidates, but also the national parties, nonprofit organizations, mobilization groups, working their hardest to make sure that their campaigns win and that voters are active and engaged,” Fraga said.Craig Eberhart is with Men of Higher Standards, a nonpartisan, African American men’s group, focusing on voter registration in Georgia.“It’s gonna be bananas,” Eberhart said.People who live in Georgia can still register to vote through the first week of December. Eberhart believes the state is ready for its place as a battleground state.“For the forthcoming future, Georgia is going to be one of those states that you can't take for granted, you don't have in your back pocket,” Eberhart said. “You're going to have to work to get the vote of the people in Georgia.”Back at Manuel’s Tavern, Angelo Fuster wonders if this runoff might be different from those in years past.“We don't have a real good record of turning out for runoffs,” Fuster said. “I think that there's that energy.”Energy left because the sun hasn’t set on the 2020 elections quite yet. 2454

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) —Police have identified their suspect after a standoff put multiple establishments near the well-known Biltmore Estate on lockdown Wednesday morning.Asheville Police say they entered a foot pursuit with Gary Adrian Church, 42, of Ronda, N.C., at approximately 9:34 a.m. local time. Church had open warrants for several robberies in Asheville, as well as Burke and Iredell Counties. The suspect fled on foot and into the woods behind the DoubleTree Hotel and TGIFriday’s in Biltmore Village. As a safety precaution, several businesses in the area, including MAHEC, DoubleTree Hotel, TGIFriday’s and the Hampton Inn were all placed on lockdown. The Asheville Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the area and stayed in constant communication with Church. After approximately 3 hours, the suspect was taken into custody with no further incident. No injuries were sustained by officers or the suspect.Police say rumors of an active shooter that had been circulating on social media were incorrect. 1055

As vaccinations get underway in the United Kingdom, United States and other rich countries who could afford to pre-purchase doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, researchers warn that about a quarter of the world’s population will be unable to be vaccinated until 2022.There are 13 vaccine manufacturers working on coronavirus vaccines, and they are capable of producing around 6 billion courses of vaccine by the end of 2021.“Just over half (51%) of these doses will go to high income countries, which represent 14% of the world’s population,” researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health wrote in their report, published in the British Medical Journal."Of the 13 manufacturers, only six have sold to low and middle-income countries,” they noted. At the time of the report, the U.S. had reserved 800 million doses of the vaccine. Japan and Australia, which account for fewer than 1% of the world’s COVID-19 cases, have reserved and potential options to get 1 billion doses.“Even if all 13 of these vaccine manufacturers were to succeed in reaching their maximum production capacity, at least a fifth of the world’s population would not have access to vaccines until 2022,” researchers noted.Covax, a global effort organized by the World Health Organization, had made initial purchases of 300 million vaccine doses. Covax is working to create equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines for all countries. President Donald Trump’s administration said they would not participate in the effort."This study provides an overview of how high-income countries have secured future supplies of COVID-19 vaccines, but that access for the rest of the world is uncertain," the researchers concluded. "Governments and manufacturers might provide much-needed assurances for the equitable allocation of COVID-19 vaccines through greater transparency and accountability over these arrangements." 1921
